Dechristianize is the fifth album by American death metal band Vital Remains. It was initially released on August 22, 2003. The lyrics deal with the Dechristianization of France during the French Revolution. The intro - "Let the Killing Begin" - features a section of Carl Orff's "O Fortuna" and voices from the film The Greatest Story Ever Told. This album was the first to feature Deicide vocalist Glen Benton, and is generally considered to be the band's breakthrough album.

Vital Remains reached the zenith of their blasphemous power with the 2003 release of Dechristianize, an album that remains a towering monument of technical brutal death metal and a definitive statement of anti-theistic warfare. Recorded at the legendary Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida, the album marked a significant turning point for the Rhode Island-born band by enlisting the iconic Glen Benton of Deicide to handle lead vocals. Benton's presence brought a visceral, commanding authority to the tracks, perfectly complementing the exhaustive musical vision of multi-instrumentalist Dave Suzuki and founding rhythm guitarist Tony Lazaro. Suzuki’s contribution to this record is often cited as one of the most superhuman feats in extreme music history, as he performed all lead guitar, bass, and drum tracks himself, weaving together neo-classical shredding, hyper-speed blast beats, and a relentless melodic sensibility that elevated the band far beyond the standard "brutal" tropes of the early 2000s death metal scene.

The thematic core of Dechristianize is a sprawling, conceptual assault on organized religion, specifically drawing historical parallels to the dechristianization of France during the French Revolution. The album’s opening track, "Let the Killing Begin," sets a cinematic and terrifying tone, utilizing a haunting sample from the 1965 film The Greatest Story Ever Told overlaid with Carl Orff’s "O Fortuna" before exploding into the nine-minute title track. This album is characterized by its massive song lengths—frequently exceeding seven or eight minutes—which allowed the band to explore complex structural dynamics, alternating between chaotic, high-velocity tremolo picking and atmospheric, acoustic interludes that provide a temporary respite from the auditory carnage. The production, helmed by Mark Prator and eventually remixed to achieve its razor-sharp clarity, ensured that every sweep-picked arpeggio and double-bass roll was heard with maximum impact, cementing its status as the "gold standard" for the Listenable Records catalog.

As of January 2026, Dechristianize continues to dominate the discourse in extreme metal circles, having recently enjoyed a wave of high-end boutique reissues that celebrate its enduring legacy. In late 2024 and throughout 2025, Listenable Records released a series of limited-edition vinyl represses, including "Neon Orange/Black Marble" and "Fire" translucent variants, which have become instant collector's items for a new generation of death metal fans. Furthermore, the band has remained a fixture of the international festival circuit; looking ahead to August 2026, Vital Remains is already confirmed as a headliner for major European gatherings like the Party.San Metal Open Air in Germany. Despite the long wait for a full-length successor to 2007's Icons of Evil, the 2026 landscape for the band is one of revitalization, with original guitarist Tony Lazaro continuing to steer the ship alongside a rotating cast of elite live musicians, ensuring that the "Let the Killing Begin" intro still triggers absolute mayhem in mosh pits across the globe.
