Description
This set of two Vogue 10-inch 78 RPM picture discs features "The Hour of Charm All-Girl Orchestra under the direction of Phil Spitalny." The artists are described on the album's inside covers in my photos. (I didn't know that the "Hour of Charm" was one of Arturo Toscanini's favorite radio shows!) Interesting too is the fact that Vogue picture discs were only manufactured in 1946 and 1947 by Sav-Way Industries... founded by entrepreneur and inventor Tom Saffady. Instead of the brittle black shellac that was used in 78's up to that time, Saffady's Vogue discs started with a strong aluminum disk on which color illustrations and clear vinyl were added. And music was then pressed into the vinyl.
My photos help to show this album's condition from front to back. The front cover has embossed gold lettering on a textured blue/brown background. In general, the album shows some wear, spine rubbing, and a little foxing on the inside covers. The first disc (Rhapsody in Blue Part 1 + Alice Blue Gown) looks very bright and nearly unplayed. But the second disc (Rhapsody in Blue Part 2 + Blue Skies) shows somewhat more use... with a few light scratches and some apparent factory indentations in the clear vinyl. Unfortunately, I don't have a 78RPM turntable, and can't say how they play! And my photos don't show that the paper sleeves for the discs are half split along their outer edges. I'll make sure they aren't damaged more during shipping.
