THE VILLAGE FUGS – “Sing Ballads of Contemporary Protest, Point of Views, and General Dissatisfaction” (1965) Broadside-304 super rare original Broadside press – VG+/VG (cover/record) with the equally rare original insert!

This is the hideously rare original debut album by this group of NYC East Village beat poets who put their writing to music – the title sums it up pretty much – it’s about sex, drugs, and politics. Ed Sanders and Peter Stampel, later of The Holy Modal Rounders were a part of this group, which also included John Anderson on electric bass, Vinny Leary on electric guitar, Ken Weaver on drums, along with Tuli Kupferberg on maracas and tambourine and Steve Weber on electric guitar.

Tracks are “Slum Goddess,” “Ah! Sunflower, Weary of Time,” “Supergirl,” “Swinburne Stomp,” “I Couldn’t Get High,” “How Sweet I Roamed from Field to Field,” “Seize the Day,” “My Baby Done Left Me,” “Boobs A Lot,” and “Nothing.”

As I mentioned, this does have the super rare lyrics/credits insert. It’s in decent shape. It’s essentially an 11” x 17” newsletter folded to 8 ½” x 11” so that it’s four pages front and back. The front page has a rip on the right bottom that comes up just more than half way – It’s about 6-inches long. There’s also one tiny passage of writing on the front in blue ballpoint pen. It’s not bad at all. Overall, I’d grade the insert VG.

This original Broadside Records pressing of this album before it was later released on ESP Disk as “The Fugs’ First Album.” It was only pressed in mono. Overall, the cover is in nice shape. It’s one of those old Folkways-style 2-pocket covers in a single pocket jacke – one slot for the insert and one for the LP. There’s little wear, but there’s a small 1-inch by ½-inch tear on the front cover (not bad – see photo), and the top seam is split entirely. The vinyl is in decent, very playable shape, with only some light hairline scratches. There’s some audible surface noise, but it’s not overwhelming by any means. This record was played, but it was pretty well taken care of, and it’s an enjoyable listen if you’re not seeking audiophile mint-quality sound. Certainly, the collector looking for this super rarity should be happy with this – there are so few of them out there. I grade this conservatively VG+/VG (cover/record).

I will quote overseas postage when overseas winning bidder specifies air/surface mail – a good guideline is $7 for a single LP by surface mail and $14 for a single LP by airmail.

I package all LPs securely in record mailers and remove the vinyl from the covers to prevent seam splits during mailing. I do not just stick your record in a priority mailer box from the post office or between two thin pieces of cardboard with no additional packaging materials like so many others!!!

Why don’t I accept Paypal? I once was a credit card merchant, operating BreakDownRecords dot com, and processing customers credit cards online using the security software provided to me through the credit card company. When someone paid by credit card, they were actually on the CREDIT CARD COMPANY'S OWN merchant processing site. Someone hacked into the credit card company's site, used my particular merchant account to process thousands of stolen credit card numbers to verify the numbers in conjunction with various expiration dates, and I lost $3,000 as a result. PayPal.com operates the exact same way. That's when I learned that as a credit card merchant, you have absolutely no redress with the credit card companies, even if it's from their end that the theft occurs. That's how they're able to offer you, the credit card user, unlimited protection. So, as a result, I'll buy things with a credit card, but no way in hell will I ever accept them again as a seller. The reward is not worth the risk.
