Description: Up for your consideration is the next in a series of unique items, this one a set of 24 Seeburg Music Library discs at 16 2/3 RPM. The mailing date on the box these were received in is Novermber, 1972. Pictured are one record and one wax sleeve as that is all I can get on my scanner such that it is up close and shows detail. If you need to see additional pics for some reason, drop me a note. Each disc comes with a wax paper sleeve. Included with this auction is the original box these were sent in which notes "24 discs". So, I do feel this is a complete set.

Several unique things about this item:
Firstly, the records retain the original shine, most with no visible marks. Record #5 had a mid-sized scuff on it. A few have some light marks, grading by sight in normal room light. I'm sure if you took these and put them under a 1000 watt bulb, you'd probably find something that makes them less than mint. If you're that kind of collector, and after a recent unpleasant experience with a buyer from Malaysia, let me suggest this auction is not for you. I don't claim these records are mint. Having said that, let me emphasize I do feel you will not find this quantity of discs in this fine of condition anywhere else.
Based on visual observation and past experience, one should expect the sides on these discs to audibly average at least 1/2 of the way between VG+(excellent) and Near Mint. My console player has a 16 2/3 speed. I took one of these discs and centered it and played a portion of it, it sounded fine.
Although these are shown as Christmas music (and the one song I played definitely was a Christmas tune), some information I saw out on the Internet indicated these sets could contain other general easy-listening music. I have no way to verify this set is other than Christmas music unless I were to listen to various records, but since I don't have a center disc for the records and my console player is not specifically designed for Seeburg records I'm not inclined to do so as I don't want to risk scratching a disc. Thankfully, when I tested the one disc as noted above the needle tracked fine and I was able to get a good sound on that record.

Secondly, at the time of this listing, no past/present sales on e-bay for this complete set and no sales found out on the Internet. I saw several past sales for ONLY five records ranging from about $20 up to $131!!

So this is your chance to own a unique set at a reasonable price. Clearly, this is a one of a kind auction!

Bid early and often so you don't miss out on this item!

It is further described below, please take the time to read before bidding.

Please e-mail if questions.

Some other Internet information I found:

"Seeburg made background music (elevator music) players back in the good old days. They were a jukebox company, so they used vinyl records. The records were an unusual size, being 9 inches around with a 2 inch hole, sort of a 45 on steroids. The record turned at 16-2/3 RPM and had 40 minutes of music per side. The disks were issued every three months, seven to a box, to be cycled into every fourth position in the record stack. The Mood library is lush, slow and innocuous, aimed at upscale eateries."

"Seeburg, the jukebox maker, produced a background music system called, strangely enough, the Background Music System. It used 16-2/3 RPM 9" records with 2" center holes. They look like big 45s. These machines were used to play elevator music in the 60s and 70s. The player was the size of a microwave oven and played up to 28 records in a stack, for 40 hours of music. It automatically restarted the stack for continuous music. The records were issued and owned by Seeburg Music Library Inc. and manufactured by RCA Custom Records. The instructions on the record boxes say they were to be played for 3 months then returned to Seeburg to be destroyed. That's probably why the records are so rare."

I am using the Goldmine scale of G=Good(1), VG = Very Good(2), VG+ = Very Good Plus(excellent)(3), NM = Near Mint(4) when grading the disc(s).

Additional criteria I use when audibly grading records for people:

  • NM(4) = absolutely nothing wrong at all (very rarely happens--I've even opened sealed records and they don't play Near Mint)
  • 3.5-3.9 = very, very light surface noise
  • 3.1-3.4 = very light surface noise, very light pops
  • VG+(3) = up to light pops and light surface noise (below this, one's enjoyment is affected, very subjective)
  • VG(2) = up to medium pops and moderate surface noise
  • G(1) = up to heavy pops and heavy surface noise

I would ship these in a larger box 14"x14"x6" padded in styrofoam. Weight with box is about 6-7 pounds . Shipping is: $4.87 Media Rate (6-7 pounds) + $2.00 box/tape/packing + $.80 delivery confirmation = $7.67.

Buyer pays shipping/handling. Standard method within U.S. is Media Rate, FREE. This includes delivery confirmation which enables you to track shipping of your package online. Outside U.S., e-mail location to determine S/H costs prior to auction end. Insurance / other methods of shipping cost extra. Payment received within ten days of auction ending. Payment via Paypal preferred.
