Though he sang in a stiff, formal manner that is not appealing to modern Country fans and though he wrote very few songs and seldom toured or did radio, Vernon Dalhart qualifies as the first big Country star to win a national following. He spent much of his career in the studios, creating a discography of some 5,000 releases on virtually every major label in the 1920’s and 1930’s; often he recorded the same songs for different companies, which issued them under one of the 135 or so pseudonyms Dalhart used. Though his recording career was virtually over by 1938, his records dominated absolutely the first generation of Country music, and many of the songs he preserved have become Country and Bluegrass standards. He he was asked to record The Wreck Of The Old '97 for Edison, and later for Victor, in 1924. Dalhart’s version that took off, thereby thrusting the fledgling Country recording industry into high gear. On the other side of Wreck was The Prisoner’s Song, with its famous chorus, "If I had the wings of an angel, over these prison walls I would fly." Though both songs eventually generated court cases over copyright and ownership, the public loved them. Sales eventually totaled over 25 million copies, according to some authorities.
Dalhart had the peculiar ability to adapt hillbilly music to suit the taste of the non-hillbilly population." Dalhart himself seemed to agree with this, and it might explain why his popularity declined after the Depression. By then, "authentic" Country singers like Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family were well represented on record, and the formalism of Dalhart fell out of vogue.
E+. Mint: One or two small scuffs. Solid gloss. Label is like new.
E. Near Mint: A few more light scuffs with a few small scratches. Mostly glossy. Very enjoyable listening. Label might be fading a little with some wear noticeable.
E-. Excellent: Some general, small scratching and scuffing to surface. No heavy scratches, digs, or gouges. Much gloss remains. Label starting to show a little more wear.
V+. Very Good: More small scratches and scuffs. A few more major scratches. Might have some of the original gloss remaining. More graying. Label shows a lot of wear, writing, scratches, etc. A common grade of popular, previously enjoyed 78s. Grade conditions above V+ should be considered above average.
V. Good: Well used. Might skip and may have greatly reduced sound output. Label may have been through a war. Might be legible on both sides.
V-. Fair: Original gloss all gone. Lots of scratches, scuffs, digs, and other assorted damage. Not much groove left. Might not play through.
P. Poor: Very little playing surface left. Might not track. Offered only if considered to be a rare find.
