Vashti Bunyan: "Just Another Diamond Day" 1970, UK/Philips 6308 019. Disc is M-, the unlaminated gatefold cover has some very minor sticker removal damage on both sides, the bottom seams are turning white from rubbing but there are no splits, this is a strong VG+ cover, very close to EX. Has the poly-lined Patent No. inner sleeve with a Feb 1970 date code that is surely the one it was issued with. Rabidly sought-after female psychedelic folk LP by the mysterious Vashti, who had been briefly courted by major-labels in the mid-60s, issuing one-off singles for Decca and Columbia. She also recorded a track in 1967 for the Tonite Let's All Make Love In London movie soundtrack and was apparently already known to Witchseason producer Joe Boyd at this time. According to his liner notes, he asked her to make an LP for him then, but instead she rode off in a horse-drawn wagon to live like a gypsy. A few years later when lean times hit, she took him up on the offer and recorded this mega-rare collection of her quirky original folk-pop songs, backed by Fairport Convention and Incredible String Band members. A remarkably well-recorded/produced LP, it has a really unusual atmosphere... the way her soft voice is captured, it sounds like her lips are pressed right against your ear, which is a bit disconcerting on first listen but it enables you to turn the volume very low and still feel like you're in her presence. I can't think of anything else that sounds quite like it. This is probably the rarest record ever issued on Philips in Britain; LPs like Czar and The Open Mind easily outnumber copies of Vashti ten to one!
