CHICO FREEMAN: The Outside Within. Used vintage LP in Mint/Very Good+ condition. India Navigation Recs. LP Catalog # IN 1042; 1981
Condition: Record played all of twice by me, original owner. Vinyl is essentially pristine. Jacket very sound, just has very minor corner crush at upper left as seen from front; semi-gloss finish has held up well, with some areas of smudges I could not wipe away; a few very minor wrinkles at right side of jacket back. Text on back fully legible.
Behind the Music: Chico Freeman may have a rep for playing “out,” but these sessions are really pretty mellow (thus the album title, I reckon). He is heard here on his specialties, tenor sax and bass clarinet (in the spirit of Eric Dolphy). Chico is supported here by the late John Hicks on piano; one of my fave bassists, Cecil McBee; and the late revered drummer Jack DeJohnette. Not a shabby lineup. Side One consists of a single composition, “Undercurrent.” Side Two consists of “The Search,” “Luna” and “Ascent.” I was honored to catch Chico in a live performance many years ago that was a reunion of sorts with his father, tenor sax man Von Freeman. India Navigation was, like Strata East Records, a very small label that deserved more attention than it was accorded by the rather heartless Music Industry. (Pardon my personal opinions!) Long live the memory of the Indies! This record has been selling at a median price of $43 on Discogs recently.

[NOTE: I clean all LPs with the Record Doctor device, but you will likely find my items rather dusty when they arrive. I have a lot of static electricity in my house, and dust always instantly returns to record surfaces after cleaning! Sorry about that!]
PLEASE NOTE: I will not sell anything for less than $9.99, as it’s not worth packaging the item up and taking it to the Post Office. Sure, you can buy an LP for 50 cents or less at a yard sale, but will it have been cared for like mine? Not likely.
