Rating: Thirteenth Step is the second studio album by American rock band A Perfect Circle, released on September 16, 2003. The album sold well, charting at the number 2 position on the Billboard 510cm its premiere week, selling over 231, 000 copies and staying on the charts for 78 weeks. The album went on to be certified as gold on November 4, 2003 and as platinum on March 24, 2006 by the RIAA. Three singles were released from the album,"Weak and Powerless", which topped both the Mainstream Rock Tracks and Modern Rock Tracks, followed by "The Outsider" and "Blue", which also charted on the respective charts

  • With its sophomore effort, THIRTEENTH STEP, A Perfect Circle permanently sheds any clinging notions of being a Tool side-project. Although Maynard James Keenan's plaintive vocals immediately conjure up thoughts of his other outfit, APC distinguishes itself by furthering the melodic elements present on the group's first outing, MER DE NOMS. "The Package" starts things off slowly, with a foreboding guitar line and minimal drum cadence that gradually build into a full-blown Sabbath-like dirge. Carried along by the fluid bass playing of Jeordie White (formerly known as Twiggy Ramirez of Marilyn Manson), "The Noose" gives a tip of the hat to the Cure's gloomiest work, while White and guitarist Billy Howerdel create an entrancingly chiming bass/guitar tapestry on "Blue."
  • Though many of the album's tracks surge with APC's powerful metal riffs, the folky "A Stranger" and the lush "The Nurse Who Loved Me" both feature Keenan's voice supported by a gorgeous bed of strings and little else. A cycle that touches on themes of corruption, despair, and redemption, THIRTEENTH STEP is brought to a fitting conclusion by "Gravity," a powerful song that captures both the dark and light aspects of this fascinating band.

13th Step is another step in excellence for A Perfect Circle. Also on vinyl you can hear all the complex layeredness alot clearer on Vinyl. There is a recurring theme of addiction on this album, especially so in songs like "Weak and Powerless", "Blue", "The Package" and "The Outsider". You'll find this album is more subdued to respect the tragic events of the world at the time. "Pet" is a song that could comfort you in fear. "The Noose" is the finest song on here, a song about not letting your new found redemption go to your head. "Vanishing" which is a very unconventional song in structure is an otherworldly spatial delight. Excellent album topped off by the epic 7 min "Gravity" which is the only song written together by Maynard, Billy, Paz, Troy and Josh Freese.
