Description

You are bidding on a great copy of the Who’s "A Quick One" on the Reaction label, 1966, Reaction 593 002.

This is a scarce original English recording by the Who, one of the most important and innovative groups in rock history. It is a much-sought-after classic. It features a cover by the very fashionable Pop Art graphic artist Alan Aldridge (later editor of “The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics” and designer of the cover for Elton John's Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy).

A Quick One was originally released as Reaction 593 002 on December 3rd, 1966 (This copy). It was the Who’s second album and followed My Generation. It reached #4 in the U.K. In the U.S. the release was held back until May 1967. The album was re-titled Happy Jack (which we also have for sale) because the "Happy Jack" single had been a minor hit [#24] for The Who there and partly because Decca, their record company, objected to the double entendre in the original title. In the US it was released as Decca DL4892 (mono), DL 74892 (stereo) it peaked at #51. Happy Jack was the same album as A Quick One except "Heatwave" was replaced by "Happy Jack."

The LP includes Keith’s first composition, “I Need You” as well as “Cobwebs and Strange.”  Entwistle’s “Whiskey Man” and his classic “Boris the Spider” are also included. As always, it is the songwriting of Pete Townshend that is truly unique. Pete's first rock opera, “A Quick One While He’s Away” contains six separate songs, 'Her Man's Gone,' 'Crying Town,' 'We Have A Remedy,' 'Ivor The Engine Driver,' 'Soon Be Home,' and 'You Are Forgiven.' "A Quick One" became a staple of the Who's live act from 1967-1970. It may have had a direct influence on The Beatles' "A Day In the Life" which was recorded the month after this LP's release.
