“The SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIAL” represents the joys and excitement of a CAJUN weekend dance where you can “let it all hang out”…dance, laugh, sing, drink and forget about life’s troubles.

I understand that this record was brought to Apple by Ringo Starr and had already been released in America. (Where it was probably Saturday Nite Special)

A small number of copies were printed as 10 inch records running at 78rpm.  I’ve seen one article which suggested between 2000 to 3000 whilst another (Discogs) suggests only 200 to 300.

 This copy includes a leaflet “Fresh From Apple” aimed at record shops and stating the release date as 17th  November.

I speculate that the record and leaflet came from an old school friend who had worked for EMI as such a rep but by 1972 has left to set up Sahara Records (think Reg King and BB Blunder & Gypsy)  Must have kept up some contacts at EMI.

On with the main event.......

CONDITION.

The pink and white dye cut sleeve has a couple of snags around the central opening. There is a small slit where the disc has worn through the paper.

The attached photographs should demonstrate the condition.

The Vinyl is in excellent* condition.  

Usually I upload an audio file with any record I have on ebay. Can’t oblige here as I don’t have a deck with 78rpm.

Neither did my brother whose record this was.  It may well be that the record has never been played. Probably in Mono

Label – Side B has a couple of blemishes on the left edge.

This is in good condition. There is light mottling/foxing.

On a blank section my late Brother has written out the lyric to Saturday Night Special.

Nice handwriting in black ink.

The package weights 260g before sealing. I'll put the disc in an LP inner sleeve and include the pink/white sleeve outside of that.

Record Collector Magazine's Grading Guide:

MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.

POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler.
