This auction is for a rare 7-inch EP by the "second generation" Southern California Mod revival band, The Jetz. Formed in 1979, The Jetz released "Just a Picture" (their second EP) in 1983. It is classic power-pop, British Invasion Mod music, a little bit R&B and a little bit punk. Fans of The Jam, Style Council, Secret Affair, The Purple Hearts, The Lambrettas and Brit-Pop / Ska and Punk will be interested in this record.

Vinyl: VG (moderate light scuffs and hairlines but plays well)

Cover: VG (no seam splits, light ringwear, fraying and small tears at sleeve opening)

Recorded in 1983, the marquee used in the album cover is the classic Lido Theater in Southern California's Newport Beach - apparently the band got the theater manager to let them change the marquee for the shoot, and they invited all their Mod friends and had them bring their scooters. The result - a little bit of "Quadrophenia" in the greater Los Angeles area! The band had improved their sound over the years, and this record was clearly more polished than their first release.

The Jetz
 
The Jetz formed sometime in the summer of 1979. The original band consisted of Steve Thompson on lead vocals and guitar, Kurt Stake on bass and backing vocals and Mike Murphy on drums. They wrote most of their own music with the lyrics being written by EHS writer/poet Bob Prow. They were mainly influenced by early British Invasion groups such as The Beatles, The Who, The Kinks, The Yarbirds, The Zombies, and also heavily influenced by a later British group, The Jam.

Part of the early 1980's Southern California Punk/Mod/Ska explosion, The Jetz were a staple in the local club circuit, playing with other important bands of that era such as The Bangles, The Untouchables and The Three O'Clock. The Jetz were unapologetic devotees of The Jam and, as such, developed a large and loyal Mod following. What sets The Jetz apart from most groups is their unique approach to songwriting. While each of the members are masters of their instrument and educated musicians, none were terribly comfortable in writing lyrics. As fate would have it, they crossed paths with a poet and frustrated wannabe musician who was more than happy to form a songwriting partnership with the band. The Jetz songs are therefore, essentially, poems set to music. Musically, The Jetz start and end with Steve Thompson on guitar and vocals and Kurt Stake on bass and vocals. Steve is a master of blending power chords, an array of effects and dazzling solos. Steve handles the majority of lead vocals and works with Kurt to form two part harmonies on many of the bridges and choruses. Kurt Stake, as is absolutely necessary in any three-piece rock band, a stunning bass player. Fingers flying up and down the fretboard, he nearly serves as both bass and rhythm guitar player. Two drummers have figured prominently in the history of the band. Scott Kellems played on the band's first EP and rejoins the band in it's current incarnation. Glenn Donnelly was the mainstay behind the kit in the band's heyday and shares drumming duties in the here and now. Towards the end of The Jetz flight of the 1980's the band added flourishes of trumpet and saxophone. Gary Sparks returns to add those horn highlights. Behind the scenes, Robert Prow adds the final ingredient - lyrics ranging from tales of infatuation and heartbreak to rants of social and political disconnection. What held true in the 1980's seems to ring true at the threshold of the 21st Century. People hurt each other and lift each other up. Whether it's broken hearts on the dancefloor or broken bodies on the battlefield, sometimes only a song from the heart can lead us to carry on with hope.

Grading based on Record Collector Guidelines:

Mint (M).  The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as sealed or unplayed will generally be Mint.

Excellent (EX).  The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

Very Good (VG).  The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good(G)   The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration etc.

Plus “+” and minus “-“ signs are used to provide additional detail when I think the condition is between two specific grades. So, for example, “ NM-“, or “Near Mint Minus”, will be a tiny bit better than “Excellent +”.

If you win more than 1 12-inch record, please wait for me to send you an invoice with actual shipping charges. Domestic shipping (via Media Mail) is $4.00 for 1 12-inch record and $0.75 for each additional, LP FOR UP TO 8 DISCS (I can fit up to 8 discs into a standard mailer).

Orders for 9 records and above will require a large mailer box, which adds an additional $4.50 to the shipping charges (that is my cost for the box + Delivery Confirmation). The good news is that the per disc cost drops to just $0.50 cents. So, an order of 10 records would cost a total of $9.50 to ship anywhere within the U.S.A., AND AFTER 15 RECORDS, THE REST ARE FREE, SO and order of 20 discs has the same shipping charges as an order of 15 discs - $12. I can fit up to 20 records in these large mailers – then I have to start over with a new mailer. Other services are available upon request – just e-mail me with what you want so I can get a quote.

NOTE: I just purchased some new, larger mailers that can hold up to 50 records! I will use these for any combined order of more than 20 12” records. Shipping costs for these mailers start at $12 for 21 records and go up $0.25 (25 cents) for each additional record. Which means an order of 40 records will cost $16.75 to ship.

International shipping is via First Class International (up to 4 pounds, Priority for over 4 pounds) – ask me for a quote, or check the USPS website (http://ircalc.usps.gov/) to get an idea about what it will cost. Non-US auction winners, please wait for me to send an invoice – the Ebay shipping calculator is not accurate, and if you use it, you will either pay too much, or not enough to cover shipping costs, and I might have to request additional money, which nobody likes.

As stated above, I package records in cardboard mailers with insulation, and purchase Delivery Confirmation (United States customers only), for your protection and mine. Although I combine items to minimize shipping charges, I can only wait up to 10 days from the end of an auction for you to win additional auctions. At the end of 10 days you will need to pay for all the items you won in that period.

Refunds are given if you let me know within 5 days of receipt of the item.  Once you send the item back, and I will issue the refund.
