Description

THE JAZZ SCENE: Produced and signed by NORMAN GRANZ in 1948, #1183 of 5000. Norman Granz selected 12 great 78RPM sides for the six records in this beautiful album, which includes sides by CHARLIE PARKER, WILLIE SMITH, MACHITO, BUD POWELL, DUKE ELLINGTON, NEIL HEFTI, LESTER YOUNG, COLEMAN HAWKINS, RALPH BURNS, and GEORGE HANDY. The album is 15" wide by 12.5" high, and includes drawings by David Stone Martin and 30 large format photographs by Gjon Mili. The photographs are printed on high quality paper and include portraits of DUKE ELLINGTON, COLEMAN HAWKINS, RALPH BURNS, CHARLIE PARKER, WILLIE SMITH, MACHITO, MAX ROACH, BUD POWELL, LESTER YOUNG, BILLIE HOLIDAY.

This one is my fathers. He bought it in 1948 with his first paycheck from his first full-time job. I can tell from the condition of some of the records that he played it when he first purchased it. But, by the time I became aware of it, he had relegated it to collection status. We sometimes would look at the photos together, but we never listened to the records. He introduced me to the performers represented in the collection on later pressings on 33 RPM albums.

CONDITION:
The overall package is in VG+ condition. The Photographs are in great condition, with no tears, smudges, stains or fingerprints. There are small bends in the lower right corner of each photo, where they settled against the shelf the album has been stored on for the past 60 years. The spacer sheets introducing the Recording Artists featured in each section have yellowed, but are strong and untorn. The outside cover has some light shelfwear. The soft black cloth cover is in fine condition with no tears, snags or holes--just some fading and light shelfwear.

CONDITION OF RECORDS:
Duke Ellington Side 1: EX - Some bag rash - from sliding in and out of the record sleeve, but most look superficial and shouldn't affect playback.
Duke Ellington Side 2: VG+ - A it more bag rash than Side 1, but, again, most should not affect playback.
Neal Hefti: VG+ - Some bag rash, but should play fairly well.
Neal Hefti/Charlie Parker: VG+ - Some bag rash, but should play fairly well.
Lester Young: EX - Some bag rash - from sliding in and out of the record sleeve, but most look superficial and shouldn't affect playback.
Coleman Hawkins: VG - Quite a bit of bag rash and some marks that look as though they are audible. It doesn't look as though there is anything that will cause skipping, though.
George Handy: VG- - This side has been played a lot and it has marks and scratches that will be audible.
Ralph Burns: VG- - This side has been played a lot and it has marks and scratches that will be audible.
Charlie Parker: EX - Some bag rash - from sliding in and out of the record sleeve, but most look superficial and shouldn't affect playback.
Willie Smith: VG+
Machito: EX - Some bag rash - from sliding in and out of the record sleeve, but most look superficial and shouldn't affect playback.
Bud Powell: VG+

SHIPPING:
Shipping insurance is mandatory for this album. The description below includes estimates of shipping costs, but I will send the actual shipping cost + cost of packing materials to the winning bidder. The album will be shipped in two separate boxes.

Domestic Shipping. The records will be shipped domestically via media mail together in a standard lp mailer. I will package the records very carefully and reinforce the box to protect them. I'll package the album (cover) in a second box and will ship it by media mail, if eligible, or parcel post, if it can't be shipped media. I estimate the cost of shipping with insurance at around $30-35. It could be more or less, depending upon the weight and value of the packages, once packed.

International Shipping. I will ship the packages by Express or Air Priority. The cost will be about $130, but the exact cost will depend on destination.

GRADING:

Records and sleeves are rated according the Goldmine criteria listed below. I grade vinyl under direct light. The highest grade I ever assign a record or sleeve is NEAR MINT. I include in my descriptions any noteworthy condition issues. I do not sell badly scratched, warped, cracked or otherwise flawed records.

NM (NEAR MINT):  Record and cover are like new.

NM- (NEAR MINT minus): A few visible marks may mar the vinyl surface visually, but do not affect play. Cover may show minor shelf wear.

EX (Excellent): A few visible marks, one or two of which may be audible. Cover may have a bent or bumped corner or two, some ring and shelf wear.

VG+ (VERY GOOD plus): Vinyl has light marks that my cause minor audible defects such as low level background noise, soft crackle or occasional pops or ticks which do not overwhelm the music. Cover may have a cut-out or show wear or minor damage to faces, seams, or corners.

VG (VERY GOOD): The record has obviously been played often but is still in playable condition. There will be obvious signs of wear or scratches which may cause surface noise or occasional pops or ticks. Minor writing, tape or a sticker can detract from the label. VG covers will have many signs of human handling. Ring wear in the middle or along the edges of the cover where the edge of a record would reside, is obvious, though not overwhelming. Some more creases might be visible. Seam splitting will be more obvious.
