Very rare preview copy of The Doors’ 3rd studio album “Waiting For The Sun” which Elektra Records shipped to radio stations several months before the album’s official release date in June, 1968. All of the promotional copies of this album, including the currently listed copy, were pressed at the Allentown pressing plant. The pre-release white promotional labels contain a large circle Elektra Records logo with a large “E” along with the “Promotion Preview Copy Not For Sale” text. 1st print “Unipak - Pat. Pending” gatefold cover contains a neon red “Promotion Copy Not For Sale” sticker affixed to the front in the upper right hand corner. The covers of some very early commercial copies came with a “Hello, I Love You” hype sticker promoting the track, but as a matter of fact the full title of the track was originally “Hello, I Love You, Won’t You Tell Me Your Name”. The full title of the track can be found on some extremely rare early music sheets, one of which we’ve included as a bonus to this promotional copy. The original vintage 1968 4-page black and white “Nipper Music Company, Inc.” 9⅛” x 12” music sheet with a 2-page notes insert contains a photo with the silhouettes of the band members taken during the “Waiting For The Sun” photo shoot on the front and an advert for the “Words Music and Guitar Chords to 11 of their Recorded Hits Plus 16 Pages of Photos” book. The music sheet’s interior contains an insert with the lyrics and notes for the track that continue on the right panel of the sheet. Just like the title page, the top of the insert also indicates the full title of the track reading “Hello, I Love Your, Won’t You Tell Me Your Name?”. This promotional copy comes with an original Elektra Records gold / tan inner sleeve with a large Elektra “E” logo. It’s impossible to find this promotional white label copy in an almost unplayed condition. The preview copies of this album were actively used by radio station DJs which is very often reflected in their condition. It’s surprising that this pre-release promotional copy having the full matrix numbers Side 1 - EKL-74024A-AL / Side 2 - EKL-74024B-AL has been preserved in such a stunning condition.

I grade the cover as Near Mint Minus. The majority of the covers of “Waiting For The Sun” have a severe ring wear on the front and back along with wear on the spine, but not this copy’s cover. It’s very clean and doesn’t have any ring wear on the front, with just a hint of it at the top of the back cover, any splits or wear. The spine is in pristine condition and doesn’t have any wear containing a fully readable text. The gatefold interior is in Near Mint Minus condition with the left panel being completely free of any soiling. The original Elektra Records inner sleeve is in fantastic Near Mint condition and doesn’t have any splits or tears. The vinyl looks unplayed and I grade it as Near Mint Minus for Side 1, as it’s completely free of any marks, and Excellent for Side 2 as it has only a couple of very light and barely noticeable scuffs from the inner sleeve. The very clean snow white labels are completely wear- and scuff-free, with only just a couple of barely noticeable spindle marks seen under a strong light source and a few almost invisible age discoloration spots on Side 1. The vinyl plays amazing with a punchy and vivid Stereo sound.
