Description
For auction is a great condition and incredibly rare genuine and legendary 3rd U.K. Stereo issue of The Beatles debut album Please Please Me PCS 3042.
For years it was not fully established that these very early 3rd issue copies existed, so few of them were pressed.
Genuine 3rd issue copies came in the original heavier cardboard ‘Black and Gold’ sleeve, with the front photo credit starting under the final S of Songs. Most copies of this sleeve you see on eBay and elsewhere have been badly treated and show major damage.
The sleeve for sale with this record is a genuine first issue ‘Black and Gold’ copy but in remarkably good condition with no tears or writing and only minor corner wear. Spine fully intact and readable.Very minor damage to fold backs. I grade this sleeve as excellent.
Original Use Emitex inner sleeve is in excellent condition.
The record. The labels - These incredibly rare third issue copies are identified by the extra small ‘33 1/3’ on the labels. These were an unwanted carry over from the original black and gold labels. From the third issue onwards Parlophone used their new redesigned logo etc for the labels, which had a large 33 1/3 incorporated. It was only after a couple of hundred of these 3rd issue labels were used that they spotted the unneeded extra 33 1/3. They very quickly changed the labels to reflect this, so the 4th issue onwards had the unwanted 33 1/3 removed.
The labels on this copy are very clean with only minor signs of use. No writing or other issues.
All third issue stereo copies tend to have either the 1M and 1G or the 1P and 1G stampers. Basically that means side two is pressed with the very first B side album stamper for any stereo Beatles record.
This record has the required 1P and 1 G stampers.
Visually the surface of side 1 is at least VG+, with only minor scuffs and hairlines. Most very early copies have been trashed through heavy and careless use but this copy is great. Side 2 is at least VG, it has a few more marks.
Sonically the record plays as close to excellent. No sticks skips or jumps. Only very occasional light crackles in quiet passages. There are two very quiet pops on track 4 side 1 at the end. Apart from this and a couple of quiet pops on side 2 there is nothing to interfere with listening pleasure
This is a chance to own an incredibly rare piece of rock and pop history. Perhaps 200 3rd stereo issue copies were pressed.
The Record Collector Rare Record Price guide suggests £3000 for the best condition copies. Hence the relatively high starting price for this auction.
