On March 21st, 1964 Vee-Jay Records released a Beatles 7” 45 RPM single with 2 songs, “Do You Want To Know a Secret” and “Thank You Girl”. Up for auction is the selection of two 1st pressing copies, a jukebox issue and a record store sealed example of the commercial release. Both of these releases represent the earliest 1st pressing with the 1st print Vee Jay Records labels containing the oval logo. The jukebox set includes an original Vee Jay Records kraft paper 7¾” x 7¾” mailing envelope with an original perforated misprint jukebox title strip at the bottom. Original single sided Vee Jay 6¾” x 7½” jukebox insert with the artwork of the single’s picture sleeve. Original fully complete unused “Printed in U.S.A.” perforated jukebox title strips ordered by Vee-Jay Records from Star Title Strip Co., Inc located in Pittsburgh, PA. The title strip contains a very rare misprint reading “You Want to Know a Secret” instead of the correct one “Do You Want to Know a Secret?” as well as mixing up the song order indicating “Thank You Girl” first. The 1st pressing vinyl by Columbia Records, Terre Haute, IN plant contains the “T” factory identifier and “1” plating number with the full matrix number being as following: The full matrix numbers are as follows: Side 1 - 63-3191-2 T1 URJ; Side 2 - 63-3219-2 , T1 URJ.

Both sides of the vinyl contain the etched “URJ” abbreviation where the “UR” refers to Universal Recording Studio and the “J” is the initial of the mastering engineer, Jerry DeClercq. The second item in this selection is a record store sealed commercial copy of this single. Even though the copy is sealed with a store’s double-sided sticker, reading “This Package Sealed For Your Protection – If Seal Is Broken Not For Sale”, the oval VJ logo labels are very well visible if you look inside by carefully spreading the edges of the West Coast printed picture sleeve. Among the two existing variations of this sleeve, the West Coast one is rarer and is different from the East Coast version by having a thumb tab top. It’s important to take into consideration that the 2nd issue of this release contains the label featuring the brackets VJ logo.

The record store sealed commercial copy is graded as Mint Minus and doesn’t have any ring wear, splits, writing, soiling or residue. The original jukebox set is in great vintage condition only having some light signs of use. We grade the record as somewhere between Strong Very Good and Very Good Plus. It retains its factory gloss only having some very light non-feelable surface hairlines and marks as well as scuffs from the original sleeve. The labels are in Excellent Minus condition, very clean and only have just some very light age scuffing. The vinyl plays amazing having a warm and soft sound.
