THE BEATLES - 'A COLLECTION OF BEATLES OLDIES'
Following the release of ‘Revolver’ late in August 1966, George Martin informed EMI that, unlike ‘Beatles For Sale’ in 1964 and ‘Rubber Soul’ in 1965, there would be no new Beatles LP for release at Christmas. This left the door open for EMI to issue first Beatles "Greatest Hits" collection.
The LP contained 8 tracks previously on other albums and 8 tracks which were appearing on LP in the UK for the first time. Also, to tempt the fans who already had everything, there was one previously unreleased (in the UK) ‘Bad Boy’.
Despite the Beatles’ popularity, the LP was their first not to reach No.1. It was held off the top spot that Christmas by the soundtrack to ‘The Sound of Music’.
This rare item of memorabilia relating to this album consists of an unlaminated LP-sized fold-over panel of similar card stock to that used by UK LPs.
The left panel depicts Robert Whitaker’s photo of The Beatles relaxing in a hotel room in Japan during their 1966 tour - the same as on the rear panel of the released LP (a copy of which is pictured but not included in this lot).
However, unlike the released cover the upper section lists the album’s tracks, in the correct running order, in alternating blue & black type. In between ‘BEATLES LP – PARLOPHONE RECORDS’ is printed in red along with the LP's mono and stereo catalogue numbers.
Printed along the lower edge of this panel are EMI’s HQ address in Manchester Square, London along with the job/date code ‘G3369/1266’ and initials ’FP’.
The other panel bears David Christian’s striking artwork as it appears on the front of the released cover. The mono/stereo indicator has been covered by a now partially removed piece of tape.
Items of this nature were quickly discarded after use but this piece survived in the collection of a former EMI employee.
Having never seen another, opinion is divided about its original function; it is either a proof cover or, more likely, a promotional display piece.
However it is possibly the only surviving example of its kind and deserves to be part of any serious Beatles collection.
CONDITION
The piece is fully intact with excellent colour. There is general wear & light creasing to both panels but no writing or missing paper.
There is a tiny 5mm tear to the rear leading edge of the left panel and an 8cm split to the spine fold which is invisible when closed.
