What a storied classic this is, from the kitsch, playful but now much loved cover shot, to the music, disregarded then but again much, much loved now. Rolling Stone magazine has this at Number 2 in its all time Top 500 Greatest Albums ever list(!!), not ironically bookended by Sgt Peppers at No. 1 and Revolver at No 3. How incredible given that Capitol disregarded it at the time, releasing a Best Of to deflect some of the commercial criticism they felt it would garner, to the band themselves with Mike Love telling Brian Wilson at the time “Who’s gunna hear this s:hit”. 23 year old Brian had had a massive emotional and psychological breakdown that led him to stop touring with the group prior to writing Pet Sounds, this time away he poured into the record, a sonic collage of timeless beauty that included, amongst every other conceivable sound, pet sounds, literally from his own pet dog Banana. Brian was maniacally inspired by Rubber Soul to make Pet Sounds, and it almost killed him, the Beatles re-paid the compliment, noting that Sgt Peppers was in-turn inspired by this masterpiece. You have to own this record. Simple. This was never released in its original form in Australia, maybe part of Capitol not believing in it locally either, it was later issued in a bland generic cover that pops up on Ebay often. This is as close as we get, a New Zealand flipback original. The laminated cover is in excellent shape, seams and spine also very strong, some ageing on the back you can see from the picture. The vinyl is a solid VG , a good dusting of hairlines is evident across both sides, as well as more noticeable scratches – but these are also all superficial, and are not feelable (I do my best to examine everything under good light), there are crackles and pops at times but this doesn't detract from the music at all. This isn't mint copy, but a nice player copy of a very hard to fond original - as usual no hassle money back if any issues
