Description

FELA RANSOME KUTI AND HIS KOOLA LOBITOS og nigerian GRAIL parlophone HEAR!!!!

ARTIST - Fela Ransome Kuti And His Koola Lobitos
TITLE - Self Titled
LABEL/ CATALOG NUMBER - Parlophone PNL 1002 (original nigerian pressing!)
DESCRIPTION - His first freaking LP!! This one doesn’t even show up on most of the crappy discographies out there (step it up wikipedia!) but that’s likely cause it doesn’t show up much ever. It’s a goddamn treasure - compiling his earliest, impossibly rare singles (around 1965-1968) into this handsome package. Those liner notes! Man, the music is great too - there’s nothing else like it. The notes name check Thad Jones and Miles Davis as influences, but is also right to call him “strikingly original” as this is highlife wedded to jazz and soul with “exotic rhythmic patterns.”
I’ve really got to hand it to Benson Idonije (the guy who wrote the notes) because his final paragaph was mighty prophetic:
“Many so-called original bands have enjoyed fleeting success on the West African music scene - only to fade quickly into obscurity. Because of his creative talent, his continual search for new sounds and new musical expression, we can be sure that Fela, and his music, are going to be with us a very long time indeed.”
Nailed it!
CONDITION - G, light scratches, varying levels of surface noise, no loud pops or skips. Most of the time the music overpowers the crackle, but it’s present. Please note: Unless stated otherwise all gradings are visual. Audio clips of the actual record for auction are provided for reference, as well as high resolution images of the sleeves. If a link is broken or not working, or you would like any clarifications, please do not hesitate to email us.

LABEL/ JACKET DETAILS - G, all seams intact, some wear to corners, hint of ringwear, smudging and light staining on the cover - I’d say it’s held up really well considering it’s age.

(((GRADING SCALE))): *PLEASE NOTE: I'm grading these African records to the same strict standards I'd grade any record, not relative to the condition you normally find African records in.*

NEAR MINT (NM)

We never assign Mint or Mint(-) grades, and the Near Mint designation is reserved for records that are visually flawless - as in, not one single mark. All records are graded visually unless otherwise noted, but any record with the Near Mint designation has also been play tested.

VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+)

Records in VG+ condition are in superb condition, but may have a faint mark or imperfection (that does not appear to affect play) holding it back from Near Mint status. A record can still attain this condition with a slight (but audibly imperceptible) warp, but this will always be noted in the description. VG+ records should play with no surface noise, clicks, pops, skips or hiss, as well as retain their luster.

VERY GOOD (VG)

Many of the imperfections found on a VG+ Record are more obvious on a VG record.  VG records have more obvious flaws than their counterparts in better shape. They lack most of the original gloss found on factory-fresh records. Groove wear is evident on sight, as are light scratches deep enough to feel with a fingernail.

VG records may have some surface noise, especially during the soft passages at a songs intro and ending but should never skip, pop loudly or overpower the music. A record receiving this grade should be a strong play copy, and something we’d personally be willing to play out.

GOOD

Be forewarned, records in G condition will have significant and obvious flaws, and are not recommended for collectors who abhor surface noise, though they should still play through without skipping. We typically avoid selling records in this condition unless they are extremely rare and have extra-musical value.
