This is the story of an extremely clever forgery.

Someone, Somewhere (probably in Italy) went to an awful lot of trouble to make this appear to be a priceless unique version of the White Album. Ostensibly, it is unique in that it is a white label test pressing of the Beatles 1968 White Album, with the unique number 0000000 stamped on the front.

So - what is genuine and what is faked?

GENUINE:

The Cover is a genuine cover for the White album with embossed The BEATLES on the front, laminated with flipback sleeve inside the gatefold.
The Black Inner Sleeves, Poster and 4 portrait cards inside are genuine.
The records do indeed play The White Album in Mono.
The Matrix Numbers stamped into the run out grooves are the correct.

FAKED:

The seven digit number stamped on the sleeve has been doctored. It originally had a four digit number (scarce in itself), but the final four numbers have been erased and overstamped with 0000
The records are almost certainly custom pressed, probably in the 1980s and probably in Italy. There are no stamper numbers in the run off grooves, only the matrix numbers. The surface of the vinyl has been artificially aged with scuffs and minor wear.
This means that the creator of this had access to a pressing plant and could manufacture a one-off pressing with correct matrix numbers. There was no mono repress made until the 21st century, so it could not be a white label of a genuine repress. The sound quality is ok, but not what you would expect from a genuine pressing from 1968.
This record was created and doctored at great length and expense to fool unwary buyers into believing they had a priceless unique item.

HOWEVER:

This item has become a piece of Beatles history in itself. It is unique. It tells a story of the lengths to which people go to create a faked artifact.

For any Beatles collector, this is a remarkable item in that it really is a unique collectors piece - not because of what it purports to be, but because of what it is.

This is the only copy of this Beatles album in the world.
