October Rust, the fourth studio album by Brooklyn-based gothic metal legends Type O Negative, gets a special 2024 reissue as part of the Rocktober campaign. This limited edition 2LP set comes sealed and pressed on striking green & black marbled vinyl, a fitting tribute to the band’s atmospheric and melancholic aesthetic.

Originally released in 1996 on Roadrunner Records, October Rust marked a notable stylistic shift for the band. Emphasizing lush ballads and melodic arrangements, it departs somewhat from the doom-laden sound of earlier and later albums, though it still retains the band’s signature dark romanticism and heavy tone. Highlights include their brooding cover of Neil Young’s "Cinnamon Girl" and fan favorites like "Love You to Death", "Be My Druidess", and "Green Man."

This album also features:

  • The first official credit for drummer Johnny Kelly, though much of the percussion is still programmed.

  • The band’s first “joke intro,” titled "Bad Ground" — 38 seconds of low-level buzzing meant to mimic faulty speaker wiring.

  • Two untitled spoken word tracks (intro and outro) with tongue-in-cheek commentary about the album's recording.

  • Abrupt song transitions and endings, especially notable in "Green Man," "Red Water," and "Haunted."

Formed in 1989, Type O Negative consisted of:

  • Peter Steele – Lead vocals, bass

  • Kenny Hickey – Guitar, backing vocals

  • Josh Silver – Keyboards, backing vocals

  • Sal Abruscato – Drums (later replaced by Johnny Kelly)
