Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 145 grams. A typical heavy pressing for the first Dawn issues.

Rarity & Info: Rare: and much rarer than even the price guides suggest. This is a genuine ‘lost’ acid-folk-psych classic, it sold very poorly indeed and almost sank without trace. I absolutely adore this album, it’s almost unique and features the wonderful Judy Dyble who featured on the Fairport Convention debut album. Comparing this to her previous vinyl appearance makes the Fairport album seem common in comparison – that I have found several times – but this is one of only three I have ever had. Some initial copies included a glossy photograph insert – this copy did not have it. However, I retained the artwork from my first ever copy, so I could run out a fantastic repro – and quite honestly, this looks as good, if not even better than the real thing. The only giveaway is the manufacturer’s name on paper back. This set is in very fine condition, and as many collectors will already know, Dawn Records were notoriously variable in pressing quality, many noisy and poorly cut. Even though this record has some mainly light marks – only a few gentle clicks were heard on the final song. This one is probably the cleanest pressing I have yet heard and devoid of loud pressing sounds and distortions that I certainly encountered on my one and only other Ebay example. Some of the problem could be due to the album being a little too long for vinyl, this clocks in at around 47 minutes or so, the grooves are a little compressed which makes tracking the information more difficult. But all the vocals and music are clear and defined with no clipping or stressing to the more difficult parts and the general lack of crackle and background sounds makes a refreshing change. Two other rare Dawn classics spring to mind that can be equally difficult to find cleanly pressed – Comus ‘First Utterance’ and Donvan’s ‘HMS Donovan’ and this is just the same. The final track does have a fine stylus mark that does emit a few light clicks, but not many, and a couple of three ultra brief high-pitch pressing sounds were heard – this on ultra sensitive equipment. But finding a better sounding copy of this will prove beyond difficult and I would suggest, most will sound inferior, especially if played many times. I am sure this copy has not been played much at all, but maybe a little carelessly so a few marks, most-all superficial and non-sounding can be seen. Side one plays superbly, even that difficult opening track where distortion was heavily encoutered before, has none. And side two is equally clean with little unwanted with just the blemishes on the final song. Also worthy of mention is the cover that can often look tatty and badly aged – this one is very impressive. So not perfect, but this sets a high standard for sound with fine good looks too. Not quite for the perfectionist, but as I said, the cleanest looking copies will, and most often do, disappoint with hidden nasties. Dawn records are notorious for this.

Brief Info: An absolute classic within the folk-psych genre with haunting beauty from former Fairport Convention vocalist Judy Dyble and Irish multi-instrumentalist Jackie McAuley, formerly of Them. This was a one-off album, that in a fair world, should have sold well, but it went practically unnoticed and was confined to the ‘lost’ vaults of history and was almost immediately deleted. A true diamond and precious record with tales of Olde England with a child-like charm to the songs, it will no doubt appeal to early Fairport and Donovan fans circa ‘HMS Donovan’. With use of unusual instruments blended with superb Dyble vocals, this has a psychedelic edge to the production with a genuine innocence to the material. This is an absolute delight and gets better with every listen. Such a shame the pressing quality was not as good as it could and should have been. Dawn, a subsidiary of the normally reliable Pye, were no Decca. Bar the fine stylus mark on the final song that does emit a small few quite light clicks, the rest plays probably as well as you will ever hear and devoid of those cringing distortions or vocal clips that this seems to suffer. The record is long, the grooves somewhat compacted and may indeed have been an issue. With gorgeous vocals and material, this is a copy that can be enjoyed and I certainly did just that.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a gatefold format with front and rear laminate. Printed and made in England. Includes a superb high-resolution repro photographed taken from an original printed on high-gloss card. It looks nigh-on the same, if not better.

Lamination: Front & Back: Both sides shiny, fresh and clear so the stunning artwork can be enjoyed to maximum pleasure. With practically full adhesion and any dulling modestly quite light. With a thick heavy record inside all these years, few will escape some rim dulling on the back, here seen modestly under angled light. The front has little. Very few creases at all – a lightish one on the back bottom right, anothers are small, very fine hairline edge types that show little. The artwork both sides looks fantastic as I hope my pictures show. Even the opening edge where the laminate ends short of full width has minimal traces of grubbiness to the exposed strip and the same goes for the reverse – the odd small tone spot trace only on what is pale ink. It will take a massively impressive example to better this significantly – and with relatively few around, that will never prove easy.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both faces in super condition with more incredible artwork, there is very little to fault. Any set-off traces are small and light. Note the vintage picture of Dennis The Menace as featured in the kid’s comic The Beano.

Top Edges: Mostly smooth and straight with minimal traces of any scuffing.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and sharp with barely any wear, any thickening or burring is tiny, few and faint. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Solid and robust, straight with minimal compression. A natural central crease has formed from opening that will be near impossible to avoid – any sinking of the text is as light as it gets. Folded square so the edges meet up closely together and parallel. The text is unworn and fully present under the unpeeled and solid laminate.

Corners: A little light tip rubbing, odd small crease or two, all retain very fine or better shape.

Cover Summary: A beautifully designed cover with few clues to it’s great age. A strong all-round example and one that will prove very difficult to find much better – if indeed you find another quickly at all. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(-): with one rear top corner crease and a little crinkle also on the back. A plain white, polylined, heavy-duty Pye-style format inner. Minimal wear as such with a little discolouration and toning of the seam adhesive. Both circle windows are immaculate and crisp with the lining robust and very clear indeed. All edges unsplit and with no repairs. This is UK patented and has the ‘Foreigh Patents Pending’ text in blue.

The Photograph Insert: MINT(-): a sepia glossy photograph that is a REPRO from an original. It looks superb and could practically pass for the real thing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VER GOOD(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays I feel quite sure. But there are a few surface marks and one fine one on the final song, that is the only one that emits a small few lightish clicks. The others are truly superficial and non-sounding – if indeed that had not been the case, I would NOT have purchased this record or offer it – that simple. This record offers very fine sound and is probably the best I have yet heard overall. Visually still a fine record that should please many collectors, but not the more discerning or perfectionists.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare Dawn original plays above it’s still very respectable visual grading and but for the fine mark on the final song, it could be one of the best you will ever hear. At the risk of repeating myself, this is a VERY difficult album on vinyl. I am a very fussy listener and my LP12 brings out the bad as well the good in all records. The lack of pressing sounds is a huge bonus – this album is known for them and when present, they simply make you cringe. Owners of Comus’ ‘First Utterance’ tell me that is also an iffy pressing and the Donovan albums on this label are also variable and rarely play anything like ‘silent’, some Man albums are similar too. The sound on this I found very enjoyable with both music and vocals focused, unclipped and with minimal traces of surface sound. Classic acid-folk with infectious melodies and songs. The surface marks are simply ignored and even the few clicks on ‘Luke That Never Was’ are hardly major or many. Only two or three ultra brief (less than an eye-blink) high pitch sounds are within the pressing, again on the final track, that apart, the manufacture quality is first-rate and never take that for granted. Buying a blind copy of this is always a risk – the best visual copy of this I ever saw had very loud pressing faults and distortion. Ironically, this has marks but offers impressive and mostly very clean sound. I absolutely love this album and little at all – well nothing until a brief few clicks on the last track, spoilt my real enjoyment of the gorgeous music. So not perfect visually (so not for the visual purist), but more than compensated by the audio information on these quite finely compacted grooves due the album duration. I feel most realistic collectors will enjoy this wonderful and rare album, and on that basis I highly recommend it.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
