Chicago post-rockers Tortoise pace the race with Touch, their first new music in nine years, and a record of intricate, squamatic dramas: 'Vexations', 'Layered Presence', 'Axial Seamount' and more hear five multi-instrumentalists stretch like many-armed gods over guitars, synthesizers, mallets, and percussion, where Krautrock, musique concrete collide over lush columnal harmonies and grids. Recorded between Portland, Los Angeles, and Chicago, the sessions adapted to the band's geographically scattered members, with pre-production work split between individual experimentation and collective refinement. John McEntire mixed the album, incorporating field recordings, acoustic instruments, and textural noise.
