1948 The first Oxfam shop opened in Broad Street. It was the first ever permanent charity shop and is still open today.

1964 The Daily Mail ran a Gift Appeal for items to be sold in the shops and raised c.£225,000.

1975 Oxfam’s Wastesaver Centre established in Huddersfield with pioneering facilities for recycling to support the shops with unsold clothes collected around the country.

1985 Oxfam’s first clearance shops opened to sell off garments from other shops at extra low prices. These shops evolved into Super Savings with the first opening in Westgate, Ipswich in 1994.

1986 The first specialist Furniture store opened in Shirley, a suburb of Southampton.

1987 Oxfam acquired the first shop planned to be a book shop in St Giles, Oxford.

Oxfam bookmark from the 1960s

1992 Oxfam shops collected 2.25 million garments in the Cold Front Appeal, providing clothes for Bosnian refugees threatened by the onset of Winter.

1996 The first Oxfam Fair Trade shop opened in York.

1998 Following the success of Oxfam's prototype Nologo shop in Soho, the Originals shops were launched in London, featuring specialist retro, designer and high street fashion.

1999 Profit from the sale of Oxfam Christmas cards sold in shops was £1.3 million.

2000 The number of shop volunteers reached an amazing total of 22,500 contributing a total of over 7.3 million hours, demonstrating how their valuable help is essential to our shops.
