Being the proud owner of all the Pearls Before Swine albums, I must say this is one of my favourites. Yes, the earlier material has an otherworldly quality and surrealism about it that this album lacks, but it makes up for that in very solid songwriting, beautifully poetic lyrics and perhaps Rapp's strongest singing and harmonizing on any PBS album thus far.
There really isn't a weak track on here, but there is a nice contrast between the slow ethereal numbers (Snow Queen, Island Lady, Butterflies, Freedom), and the more upbeat and at times country tinged tunes (A Life, Simple Things, Everybody's Got Pain, Come to Me). It's great hearing Rapp let loose a bit on A Life and Come To Me, delivering some of his most expressive vocal performances. Finally, his cover of Bird on a Wire does the song and the ideas behind it more justice than any of the many many versions I've heard, doing so in Rapp's own inimitable way.
Don't dismiss this because it seems a little more commercial than his previous efforts. Rapp isn't pandering to popular taste here, he's just exploring songs and ideas that are timeless and universal.
