Not to be confused with the Misterioso album which was recorded at the Five Spot, this Misterioso came a few years later and was recorded all over the place, some tunes from the Newport Jazz Festival (the aptly titled "Light Blue"), some stuff even came from Japan ("Evidence"). Maybe this was a statement. Monk was denied work in many clubs due to a petty drug conviction during the late fifties, and perhaps this album was a dedication to the first Misterioso album and the famous Five Spot, as here he was with an album recorded though various venues and taking in a few countries. All round the album is a cool and breezy collection of Monk in both lazy and vibrant form. Though when he is lazy he still produces a vivid ambient and blows with a quirky style. Among the eight cuts on the album there is little to get disappointed about, yet hardly an album to play every day, no, you'd just get sick of it. Sunday mornings, nice Autumn bleeding into Winter mornings flicking though the Sunday papers seems just about the perfect time to play Misterioso, Recorded On Tour, but then again, I seem to say that about every jazz album! What I find is the strength of the album, and can be said for Monk in General, is that when he starts to play in an almost esoteric, angular way it's when the band kick in and join the tune that it all fits into place with an ease, especially the saxophone of Charlie Rouse which blends seamlessly with Monk's piano but with very different and contrasting dynamics. Great production work from the patient Teo Macero who could really give a jazz album that special feeling, capturing the essence and mood of the musicians.

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(d)            In addition, White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 50:1.

(e)           Minor yellowish dust speckles noted on the record label on side 2

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some ring wear.  On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4 (front side) and 5 (back side).

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.  (nothing significant)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn (nothing significant)

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
