This is the second long-player to be taken from the same August 1958 Five Spot recordings that had yielded the similarly brilliant Thelonious in Action The quartet heard on these sets includes Monk (piano), Johnny Griffin (tenor sax), Roy Haynes (drums), and Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass). Their overwhelming and instinctual capacities directly contribute to the powerful swingin' and cohesive sound they could continually reinvent. While these are Monk's tunes, arrangements, and band, it is Griffin who consistently liberates the performances. During "Nutty," his flurry of activity -- which adeptly incorporates several lines from "Surrey With the Fringe on Top" -- has a maniacal swing that is highlighted by some definitive counterplay from both Haynes and Monk. Additionally, the transition between Haynes and Monk is organic and seemingly psychic. "Blues Five Spot" -- a 12-bar blues homage to their current residence -- features solos from each band member. Griffin and Monk again display the seemingly innate ability to instantly recalculate chord structures as well as transmute melodies. The show-stopping solo vamp from Griffin hurls the rhythm along while simultaneously dropping in quotes from other tunes -- such as the theme for the animated Popeye cinematic shorts. Malik's brief solo, like his band interaction, is underrated yet precisely executed. The title track is given an exploratory performance. While Griffin aptly seizes the reins to blow his bop onslaught, Haynes' natural and subdued agility perfectly supports the extended tenor solo, creating some unique passages. Ironically, the one Monk solo performance, "Just a Gigolo," is the only composition not by Monk.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS ITEM COMES FROM OUR RECENT ACQUISITION OF ABOUT 10 1950s ALBUMS WHICH ALL HAD A MILD-TO-MODERATE COVER DAMAGE DUE TO EXTENDED EXPOSURE TO HUMIDITY (THE RECORDS WERE ENTIRELY UNAFFECTED); TYPICALLY, THE PAPER SLICK ON THE FRONT PANELS HAD SEPARATED FROM THE CARDBOARD BASES AND HAD TO BE REATTACHED; THERE ARE ALSO FISSURES AND CRACKS IN THE LAMINATION ON THE FRONT SIDE, OR ON THE PAPER SLICK ON THE BACK PANEL,  MINOR WARPS ALONG THE OPENING, AS WELL AS A FEW TINY PEEL-OFF MARKS ON THE BACK SIDE;  THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE COVER'S CARDBOARD BASE DOES NOT APPEAR SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECTED, BUT THE PAPER SLICK ON THE BACK AND THE LAMINATED SLICK ON THE FRONT WILL TYPICALLY HAVE SOME PROBLEMS; BEFORE YOU PLACE A BID, PLEASE READ CAREFULLY OUR COVER CONDITION SO AS TO AVOID ANY DISAPPOINTMENTS LATER THANK YOU.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions  ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new. Minor droplet-like stains noted on the disc's surface, side 2,  not expected to be audible.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)             The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)

-        A faint water stain affects the area about 2 inch wide along the edges (spine, bottom, opening side); there is no structural damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is visible and has caused some erosion in the firmness of the cover ,  loosening of the lamination and a few cracks and fissures in it, visible yellowish discoloration, a few microscopic peel-off marks and a slight warp in the affected area (which has no effect on the record whatsoever).  All tiny peel-off marks COMBINED total less than 1 square inch.

-         Cover has a visible crack (tear) in the paper slick on the back panel, which has been repaired with a 11-inch long piece of clear scotch tape.

-         Cover has a visible air bubble in the front (laminated) slick on the front panel

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Dusty staining noted on the front panel

-         The laminated cover has a slight loss (flaking) of lamination along the opening edge (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers; lamination is just beginning to peel-off along the opening edge; however, since the underlying layer of the cover is ALSO laminated, the peeled-off spots are only a minor visual distraction

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the opening side

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No stickers or labels

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
