Label Conditions: All four in fantastic conditions: all very clean, incredibly fresh and highly attractive with only very light (sides three and four), to light (side two) and a little above light spindle marks (side one). A superb pair of records that offer pristine sound and in terms of this classic album, this one looks very lightly played with fantastic clean playing surfaces.

Cat Number: Track Deluxe Double 2657013.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 116 / 113 grams. Not untypical weights for these records.

Country of Manufacture: England – yes true, even the cover was made in the UK. Just about ever example I have ever seen were manufactured in Holland and this is the very first English-made example I have ever seen. I do not know how many of these were ever manufactured here, but they are certainly rarely seen for sure. Please see the proof of this Howard’s Printers of Slough imprint on my close-up picture, this situated inside the back cover as per always.

Rarity: Moderate: but it’s the conditions that really make the difference. This one is a little different in a few ways. Firstly, the both records look very little played and offer stunning clean sound for their entirety. Secondly, the cover is printed in the UK, and how many of those do you ever see? Just about ever example I have ever seen has a Holland-made cover. And lastly, this has the heavy thick book inside the cover still attached. I hardly know how, but this is how I bought it, and it seems firm enough even though the front card seems pulled. Quite honestly, I took my few pictures quickly and simply put it back inside a protective cover as quickly as possible. I know just how fragile these books are and I have seldom seen many that are still attached to the main cover. I did not even check the back staple area in fear of pulling the pages. What the run was for Howard’s covers, I have no idea, but for sure, I feel certain it’s the only one I have ever seen. This has a massively wide spine that is still solid and erect, not crushed or compressed, that is hardly common either.

Brief Info: A near impossible task to follow-up ‘Who’s Next’ and ‘Tommy’, but this monumental double set arguably reaches even higher standards or brilliance. A second rock opera that was set in the 1960s based around the Mods and Rockers gang rivalry at the time. The lead character is Jimmy, a tormented Mod youth, heavily into scooters, music, gang fights and drugs, the story follows his psychological problems and social attitude and eventually his path to self-destruction. The music and sound quality is simply of the highest possible calibre. Set in London and a weekend in Brighton, just listen to the sea with it’s crashing waves, it sounds so real you could be on the beach yourself. At last, a copy that does this evergreen masterpiece full justice. A very neat and hardly worn, one printed in England too, and I feel certain, it’s the first one I have ever seen. Very unusually, the book still attached, but evidence from the front, the staples have pulled, but the back must still have a hold. As stated above, I did investigate too closely, as I now this falls out all too easily and my handling for this one remained ultra careful and very brief. Both records played little and offering superb sound quality throughout. A really impressive copy for those who need it, or simply an upgrade from what is far from a standard copy.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High+: for all the reasons outlined above, this cover is seldom seen devoid of damage and wear.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): this being somewhat conservative. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Made with quite soft card and with a very wide spine indeed. Inside is a 44-page (22 sheets) black and white book with all the song lyrics and details. Also many pictures following Jimmy’s story. Printed and made in ENGLAND by Howard’s Printers of Slough.

Cover Front: A quite flimsy cover that was barely up to the job of supporting the weight of two records and the very large book inside. Thus, the majority are tired looking, damaged and the book in most-all cases, separated. This front is in super condition with barely anything to fault bar small, light tip rubs. A deliberate drab-looking cover to depict the era of the story, this very unusual for the time of glam-rock, where most-all else was bright and colourful. The total lack of ringwear is very unusual as is the lack of creasing – I have seen few better than this and I still feel sure it’s the first UK printed version I have seen too.

Cover Back: Almost the same again with just small tip creases and mild rubs – little else to fault and again, no ringwear.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both inside front and outside back covers are superb, I cannot open the back fully or it would risk almost certain detaching of the book. The black and white book is secured by adhesive to the cover in manufacture and two staples. These do not penetrate into the spine, which would have been a better idea to secure this book more long-term. The fact is, this 44 page book (22 sheets) is very heavy and puts enormous stress to the under-strength structure of this cover. It’s no wonder most are seen with pulled pages or the entire book itself detached from the main cover. Two thin staples were never enough to hold this together long especially if the book was opened or ‘used’ too many times. As stated, from the front view, the staples have pulled from the single sheet retainer, but still attached at the back. I decided not to investigate the back too closely, as pulling this as all would almost certainly make the book lose it’s grip. This one is very neatly and squarely adhered to the cover – not all were – I have seen some with pages poking out of the main cover which is never great visually and meant the book was even more vulnerable. I have carefully checked ALL the pages, and ALL are immaculate with no creases, folds, tears, marks or grubbiness. For those of a certain age that remember the Mods and Rockers from the 60s, this will bring back those memories. The large pictures that look better in black and white – remember, these were black and white television and photography times – follow Jimmy’s path to self-destruction. One picture of him on his bed - stoned-out, with his bedroom wall covered in pin-up girl pictures – unfortunately, the Ebay rules will not allow me to show it. Finding one still fairly secure, solid and neat is far from easy, this is so delicate and long-term security of the book can never be guaranteed – never dismiss these lightly because, truly, most of these books are detached or very lose or pulled at best. The front is pulled, so this is beyond delicate, but does still feel pretty secure. This album was purchased from a shop and I do not know it’s history, I have simply described what is here in front of me. For any potential winning bidder, please treat this with utmost care.

Top Edges: Light patchy rubbing on the front, little is seen at all on the back but the corners have rubbed.

Bottom Edges: Similar again with just a fraction more rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering, both guaranteed untrimmed. Records entered on these right outside edges.

Spine and Text: Another very fragile part of this cover: it is fairly thin and flimsy and definitely under-strength to support the weight of this fully laden album. Obviously thick to cover the book, this one possibly even thicker than standard. The staples are not punched into it which would have been a much better idea. Solid, straight with no compression and uncrushed too. Still fully erect with no tilt at all. Folded squarely so the edges meet up neatly together, totally flush and parallel. This makes a big difference for the more discerning collector for neatness and visual enjoyment. The spine surface has barely anyt hint of rubbing or wear up to the ends – the bottom has a light rub only, the top more moderate – this can be seen on very close-up pictures. I consider this very light indeed for such a fragile cover with such a massive and delicate spine. The first covers has the text: ‘THE WHO QUADROPHENIA’ & ‘TRACK DELUXE DOUBLE 2657013’. All this text is perfect and unworn, and again, do not take this for granted.

Corners: The fragile corners all have light to moderate rubbing, this rarely avoided. These retain fine to very fine (or better) shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this far more elusive English-made cover, when was the last time you saw one of these that was not Dutch made? With a very neat book inside, that appears and feels quite solidly attached, this makes for a very collectable, desirable and unusual copy. This very attractive all-round item should please most collectors. Only the corner rubbing is of any real concern for the more discerning collector.

The Inner Sleeves: NEAR EXCELLENT: little real wear but have the usual seam adhesive darkening that few seem to avoid. These are a patching pair and both are similar. Polydor-style lined inners that have avoided any significant creasing. The window circles are neat and crisp, the lining secure and clear with a little crinkle. All edges are unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a super visual pair that are very clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed. A pair with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, light and faint – four very impressive playing surfaces and without doubt, little used, reitterated by exceptional audio quality. Visually super records that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play even above their high visual grading with nothing to fault. A real high fidelity recording with great power, sonic delivery and detail. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and a great production. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform these top quality pressings I feel sure. I am certain both records have been played very lightly and have been clearly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these high quality Track records. This set will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. To own a 100% UK made copy is something that will not be offered often and seldom in such find condition.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
