Description
This vintage automatic Dual 1228 turntable is in superb condition, super-clean, works great and sounds incredible. It includes both the short and the long spindles, the original Dual 45 rpm adapter, and the original owner’s manual and a base template sheet. The headshell is loaded with an Audio Technica ATN-3600 cartridge with a fairly new Audio Technica ATN-3600 stylus.
The turntable features 33 and 45 speeds. Speeds are accurate, but can be adjusted.
This Dual is a fully functioning automatic unit and includes both the short and the long spindles. The short spindle is for manual operation and the long one is for changing records. The record changing mechanism works fine. That means when started the record will drop onto the platter and the tonearm will move to the beginning of the record. When the record is finished it will return to the tonearm rest and shut off or if there is another record it will drop that one and start over again.
The motor was completely rebuilt: I honed and polished the sintered bearings, then soaked them in 5w high-performance oil along with the felt washers. I also cleaned and polished the shaft ends of the armature as well as the contacts. The motor is now extremely quiet and smooth.
Everything was cleaned inside and out. The rubber drive roller was cleaned and rejuvenated with a rubber restoration liquid. All the old oil and grease were removed, then all the parts were cleaned and new grease and oiled were applied where appropriate. All other parts were cleaned and all appropriate moving mechanisms were oiled.
The controls work freely and with just a light touch because all the levers were removed and the metal arms were polished and the housings were honed and polished.
The rubber drive roller was cleaned and rejuvenated, so that it has plenty of grip. The brass motor pulley was cleaned and polished to eliminate slippage as well.
All the old oil and grease was removed, then all the parts were cleaned and new grease and oil were applied where appropriate (You can see the new grease on the main cam mechanism in the photo of the underside.) All other parts were cleaned and all appropriate moving mechanisms were lubed.
The 8-pound cast aluminum platter was cleaned on the inside where it contacts the rubber drive wheel, and the outside was polished.
All electrical contacts were carefully cleaned and treated with De-ox it to eliminate hum and improve performance, including the the headshell contacts the tonearm contacts, as well as the phono connector and RCA jacks.
The wooden base is in beautiful condition and looks almost like new. It was completely refinished and includes 4 coats of polyurethane.

Even the rubber mat looks like new!
