Description

Hi, I am Mike, I am 46 and have been a music collector and enthusiast for over 33 years now. We all wish we could turn back the clock and buy those wonderful brand new records from the 60s and 70s, but alas, this is not possible; so I always try to offer the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. No vinyl/music lover really would choose to buy second-hand, but this is only way now to own these valuable, prized and ellusive items now. I pride myself on offering a variety of genres to keep my site as interesting as possible. I will rarely offer any record that falls below a true Excellent grading, unless its of a certain rarity which will justify offering a lesser grade. I try, to the best of my ability to describe as accurately and as honesty as I can all items I offer for sale with all the relevant information I can think of to help any potential bidder and collector. You may notice I only submit records sparingly on Ebay - on average ONEADAY, hence the name - time rarely allows for more as I Play-Grade virtually every record I offer in their entirity, not just bits to guess a grade (on a Rega 3 deck with Ortofon cartridge) - visuals alone do not always tell a true or full story - I will mention any defects or flaws no matter how small that I notice to be fair as possible to any interested reader – I am very fussy and my buyers have the right to be too. Every record I offer, whether it be a common or rare item deserves the same respect as far as I am concerned and will be treated the same - just because an item is rare does not always mean its good. I get just as much pleasure offering a relatively common record in stunning near mint condition as the real rare items. All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. What you see is what you get. The only thing I cannot guarantee one hundred percent is exact colour matching - this depends on the lighting at the time and that is out of my control, but I feel sure most items will be very close to the actual real item. Variation can sometimes occur too in colour of the label scans and labels taken next to the sleeve with a digital camera, the scanned full label pictures should be the most accurate. If any picture I take looks more flattering than the actual item for any reason, I will clearly state the fact in the advert. I hope the item below is to your liking - any questions can be emailed and I will do my very best to answer you. I am enthusiastic , and have a fair degree of knowledge about many genres and I promise quality items - bid with confidence - excellence comes as standard and so does Near Mint regularly. Please assume all records I offer have NO jumps or sticks or writing on covers or labels unless clearly stated to the contrary. Thanks for your interest and Good luck – MIKE.

Please Note: I will now offer any item to the runner-up after the mandatory Ebay 3 days if no contact is made by the winning bidder. The same applies if no payment is received within the mandatory 7 days so any bidder who has just lost out can still email me to reserve the item as priority second chance. Item wants are always welcome - email me with anything needed, you never know - I may just have a copy in stock. I by quality single items and collections also (Email me please if you have quality items for sale).

Debutant Bidders: Many sellers refuse first time buyers: I do not follow this practice (everybody has to start somewhere), but I would appreciate any first timer letting me know their intentions of their intended payment method and very prompt communication, preferably before any bid or soon after the auctions ends. This gives confidence that their intentions are honourable, and I in return guarantee extra special good feedbacks to get zero rated Ebayers off to a flying start to help them with future transactions. NOTE: I WILL NOT ACCEPT BIDS FROM UNREGISTERED USERS, I will cancel them immediately, and sorry, I cannot give valuations on people’s personal items just for their own curiosity, no item can be accurately valued blindly.

Please read all the information carefully - these adverts take an age to compile properly - so it’s well worth a few minutes of your time to read the details thoroughly. I really cannot take any responsibility if any bidder fails to read any facts that are clearly stated in the advert - Thankyou.

Artist or Band: THE WHO

Album Title: My Generation.

Track Listing: Out in the Street; I Don’t Mind; The Good’s Gone; La-La-La-Lies; Much Too Much; My Generation; The Kids Are Alright; Please Please Please; It’s Not True; I’m a Man; A Legal Matter; The Ox.

Label/Format: Brunswick (The quite magnificent original matt black with silver text) Slight rough textured finish.

Label Condition: Words almost fail me on this pair: they are strong candidates for the best pair of rare 60s labels I have yet seen. Given what most copies of this classic debut look like (when found), this pair of labels set a standard for any others to try to match, let alone better. They are simply magnificent and my pictures can never do them justice. They are pristine clean with no chipping and retain a freshness that only the very best, well treated and lightly played record ever can. This stunning copy was again owned by a Gyrodeck user - a very high end turntable that inflicted hardly any wear to records and only the connoisseur vinyl lovers used such fine equipment - I tip my hat to these people. This pair of Brunswick’s have only the lightest and faintest spindle traces you can imagine and simply blow away their age. This record was purchased on 22/3/66 - its written in small neat pen on the cover’s back near the word mono, top right, and how many copies will ever remain looking and sounding quite like this will be minimal. A mono record that simply has by-passed and avoided the usual heavy treatment and abuse from pile-driver deck arms from the mid-60s and these labels confirm it still further. There is only one faint spindle trace that leaves the fine inner circumference circle of around 3/16 of an inch and few others at all. I would estimate the number of plays for this rare gem would be around 4 to 5 but this is subjective, what’s for sure, it’s few. There is no wear or chipping around the hole on either side an even more accurate guide to playing. Its a beautiful item with stunning, near pristine labels and any serious collector’s mouth will water over this pair. (Please see label scans for all information needed).

Cat Number: LAT 8616.

Mono or Stereo: Mono (Not issued in stereo)

Country of Manufacture: England, Brunswick Ltd, London

Rarity: Rare in any condition, a record that looks and plays like this one is rarer still and these simply will hardly ever be found playing like this.

Original Year of Release: 1965

Matrix Nos: MG 10256-1B and MG 10257-1B This has various small numbers: the main stampers are: 20 DU / 21 3MA Also KT - the tax codes I would guess. All these stamper codes are quite hard to read but I feel pretty sure these are correct. The actual matrix numbers are super clear and defined, no doubts about these.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Without any shadow of doubt one of the most important albums ever in the history of British rock music. A stunningly powerful debut, short, sharp songs dominate with a teenage angst and power that took the world by storm back in the mid-60s. Three young musicians of the highest quality and maturity and a specialist vocalist that remains to this day one of the greatest ever. Townshend, Moon, Daltrey and Entwistle were a class act and made some of the most wonderful albums ever issued within their field and it all started here with this masterful recording, only recently available again to the world again via CD, but even this apparently has important detail missing and sounding vastly inferior to this definitive record. Even reissues of this are scarce and only ever officially offered by Virgin on vinyl. But forget all that, this is the real thing and what a beauty it is too. I wish to first make clear this album has only a couple of very minor blemishes - to the sleeve, NOT the actual record. As far as I am concerned they are minor anyway taken into context of rarity and what most will show up like. The original owner was a collector who cherished his records and wanted them to live long. Too try to keep his covers pristine in those very early days, probably before even outer protective covers were widely available, he put a piece of clear tape around the entry edges of this sleeves to stop feathering, wear and tearing. This has dried over the years and simply fell off. Its left a thin (1/4 inch only) light brown line on the back sleeve, it looks no worse than an end of laminate line that forms on the vast majority of 60s covers and it must clearly show on my picture of the back. The laminated front has left barely a trace at all and it looks fantastic. Also as stated the figures 22.3.66 are printed neatly on the back cover (the day he purchased it) - I consider this important and not detrimental at all, its almost like an original price sticker, it proves its age and even gives this back character when done very neatly. The original inner is included and has a few small pieces of tape as well and the The Who Generation written on the top of one side. The record is breathtaking, close on 40 years old now and only showing a couple of tiny faint surface traces that are totally superficial and non-sounding. This record will be near impossible to find better and if anyone has a better copy of this record they are very lucky indeed.

Cover Grade and Format: Even with the blemishes I am going to grade this as EX+ (the front and edges are more Mint(-), simply because it deserves it, it still looks lovely and the front especially is close to perfect. Its a single format and laminated on the front. Its laminated with Clarifoil made by British Celanese Limited. And was printed in England by Robert Stace. One of the definitive covers in rock music history and with so many in terribly worn out conditions this - even with the mild tape blemish - is a breath of fresh air. I would rather substitute that fine brown surface line anyday for heavy creasing or deeply ringworn versions. Okay a pristine mint one is always desirable but these are rare and seldom seen and a second mortgage would be demanded from hi-end specialist sellers and the big second hand shop sellers. This is a superb early cover and I feel even most connoisseur collectors should be pleased with this one.

Lamination: Outstanding! - and what a delight to see virtually uncreased, this vintage cover’s card was always quite thin making creasing almost a close certainty, but this well loved cover has avoided almost any - any present are very small and light and hardly anything shows. This is the early semi-gloss finish that were often used on the early Stones albums too, the serious collectors will know the type. This has no peeling or dry areas and has no dulling at all. Indentation and mark free this is clearly vintage of the highest class and looks fantastic. Any residue from the aforementioned tape is minimal, the odd tiny pale brown mark on the white thin border but normal toning age wear usually shows more than this. This laminate front will rarely be seen much better than this.

Cover Front: Wow just look at this again, a superb item that has classic written all over it (not literally of course). A very British cover, note the Union Jack on Entwistle’s shoulder. Four clean cut lads making a classic and this is in beautiful shape. Clean with stunning rich coloured artwork that has retained its fresh clean looks and rich colour depth, the laminate has done a fine job protecting this one. This front is definitive and does more than justice to the amazing record inside that incidentally has left little impression on this fine front.

Cover Back: This does show its great a little more I suppose but is still magnificent really. I will mention that small line on the entrance edge again and the purchase date too - just to be clear., all the detail is above and I cant keep repeating myself. The back generally has darkened a little but grubbiness is generally light on the white finish and its not yellowed. The handling areas around the top and bottom show fractionally more toning discolour. No rubbing or dreaded ringwear and most ageing wear is simply natural discolour over the 40 odd years of existence. This back is way, way above average and still looks fine too, I think most 40 odd year old covers would be pleased to look like this back generally.

Top Edge: Virtually unworn.

Bottom Edge: Virtually unworn, microscopic fray trace on the bottom card overlap is being critical.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no real wear - the tape did its job and prevented almost certain feathering on this thin card entrance. Record entered on right outside edge.

Spine and Text: Solid and square with little wear, text is perfect and unworn under the mainly uncracked laminate. A few small hairline creases only on this magnificent spine that have avoided all the text. The fine tapering top and bottom can still be seen too. Again quite exceptional given the age.

Corners: All four show little wear. All still nicely shaped and again will rarely be seen much better.

Cover Summary: A beautiful item, blemished yes, but let’s be realistic, how many covers this fragile, this age and this type will survive looking much better? The front will not be beaten easily and this strong item should please most collectors.

The Inner: This is still quite nice but has three small small brown tape areas on one side and two the other and The Who Generation written on the top of one side. It has a British patent but foreign patents pending. Its polylined and in very respectable condition with only creasing to one corner area. The die cut window is clean and untorn with the lining still fully intact and clean.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-)/EX+ A superb visual copy the likes you will rarely ever see on this vintage record. Super clean, fine shine, jet black and very heavily pressed. Barely a mark to be seen on side one and side two only has a few very light, hairline type marks - totally superficial and non-sounding on this deep grooved mono record. This looks really lovely and is in the ‘Exceptional’ class. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please most, if not all collectors again.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This super record plays up to its high visual grading with little to fault. Strong, undistorted sound, a fact never to be taken for granted on mono albums this age, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a massive dynamic range and very full sound. The power and detail embedded in these clean unworn grooves is testament to the original owner who cherished his collection. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, and few copies will play better than this. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and looked after. The taping was done for longevity and pride, it has clearly protected the delicate edges. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this undisputed classic. If you have never heard a Brunswick copy of My Generation it could be said you have never heard it for real at all. This copy could prove near impossible to find significantly better.

Mono vs Stereo, an overview: Always a matter of opinion which is better or more important. For any serious collector where there is a choice e.g. Beatles, Stones, Hendrix etc. both are essential. True Stereo albums give great imagery and presence whereas mono albums usually are more dynamic, louder and present the detail more clearly. Mono albums are far harder to find in genuinely top playing condition. Most were heavily played, particularly the truly great bands and artists, often covered in mark and scratches, many severe and labels that were a mass of spindle marks. The majority were played on vintage and unsubtle decks with heavy tonearms and thick styli (often sapphire, not diamond, that chipped more easily) that rendered heavy wear in a very short time to many a fine classic record. Wear to the delicate groove walls, particularly the innermost tracks to the labels were most vulnerable where the tracking angle became more severe and the backdrag actually stripped the delicate groove walls. This resulted in surface noise and mild/moderate distortion or worse. These old decks tracked by sheer weight and little of any refined engineering. Next time you see such a deck at a local record fayre, feel the weight of the arm, it almost makes you wonder how any records survived at all. The point of this paragraph is emphasise that when a truly clean, lightly played and great sounding 60s mono album (or stereo come to that) is offered, treasure it, because for sure they are truly getting vary rare and precious - beware - demand only play-graded records. As a general guide to rarity, mono was the far more common format from 61–65; Around 66–67 the balance was roughly equal, then from 68-69 the balance swung more to stereo, making monos from these dates far scarcer, even rare - this guide is important and effects values greatly.

Album Played For Grading: Yes.

Final Summary: British mid-60s popular rock at its very best. The Who had real energy and class, even on this early recording the world knew they were extra special. Nine of the 12 songs were original, few bands at this time wrote so much original material so early - Townshend is a genius. I am delighted and feel honoured to offer such a lovely copy and item. The importance of this vintage pressing in the history and development of British music is unquestionnable. Only rarely do debut albums have the qualities to inspire like this one and a copy like this does near full justice to its importance. Cat Price for this are already high and set to rise vastly in the updated versions - a copy of any classic like this is an investment and better than cash in the bank, so certain a title like this will never decrease. Even with the minor blemishes I strongly recommend this copy - unless you are a total perfectionist this should please most of the serious collectors reading this advert - Good luck again. – Mike.
