Originally released in 1961. Singer-guitarist John Lee Hooker didn't spend much time with Chess, the giant of Chicago blues, although he didn't spend a lot of time with any label. Chess 1400 series was released under the alias John Lee Booker. Chess 1462 was also released on Von Battle's Gone label. By spring of 1951 the Chess and Bihari brothers (Modern) appear to have struck some sort of deal and Chess would never again use the Booker alias on Chess releases.

Hooker (1917-2001) was one of the most successful blues artists of the second half of the 20th century, yet his hypnotic brand of blues was in many ways a throwback to earlier times, before rules of rhyme, meter, and chord structure became standardized. The Clarksdale, Mississippi-born musician burst on the national scene with his first record, "Boogie Chillen," which topped Billboard's Most-Played Juke Box Race Record chart in 1949.

Like other recordings from Hooker's early studio sessions, the tunes featured here bristle with driving energy and ripple with the power of his shouted declarations. This is back porch music from the heart of the Delta, jolted to larger-than-life proportions by the electricity powering Hooker's guitar and by his own strong desire to quit sweeping factories and begin cleaning up on the charts. Although he often reworked themes by earlier bluesmen during this period, it was rare that Hooker outright covered another artist's material. So his riveting interpretations of Muddy Waters's "Please Don't Go" and Big Maceo Merriweather's "Worried Life Blues" peak this collection of solo turns.

HOWLIN WOLF MOANIN  IN THE MOONLIGHT LIMITED EDITION 180 GRAM LP

Like many of the blues albums released during the 1950s and into the following decade, Moanin In The Moonlight was not recorded as an album but rather as a series of singles. At some point, when Howlin Wolf had recorded enough material to justify it, these would be gathered together to create a new release. Whilst this would imply the album lacks any degree of spontaneity, the fact is that Howlin Wolf was such a unique musician and singer theres a level of quality to all of his recordings. A collection of singles it may be, but what a collection!

ROBERT JOHNSON -  KING OF THE DELTA BLUES SINGERS PART ONE CBS/COLUMBIA RECORDS CL1654 OUT OF PRINT PRESSING -

One of the greatest blues artist of all time, the legendary Robert Johnson recorded only enough music to fit onto two LPS. After his death at the age of 27 in 1938, Johnson had only 12 known 78rpm records (42 tracks in total if you include alternate takes) under his belt. But those records would go on to influence the world of blues and rock & roll like no other recordings and become an essential influence to Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, and Keith Richards (to name just three). When you think of the blues -- despair-filled, acoustic, yet often sly and humorous -- you think of recordings such as these. Though myths about the blues icon selling his soul to the devil abound, all that really matters is the wonderfully timeless, and frustratingly small, body of music he left us.

I first got into Robert Johnson when I got the Complete Recordings Box Set on cassette about 20 years ago and I did so as I was at the time learning as much as I could about playing blues-based guitar as well as reading about my own personal influences such as early Clapton and Beck and I was amazed at how often Johnson's name kept coming up during their interviews and I subsequently found out that legends such as Elmore James "Dust My Broom", Muddy Waters "Sweet Home Chicago", The Rolling Stones "Love In Vain", Clapton "Ramblin' On My Mind" and even the Red Hot Chilli Peppers "They're Red Hot" would count him as a key influence in their music. There are of course other Johnson tunes that they covered but the ones I mentioned happen to be on this album.

Johnson was one who truly understood the blues and he made you feel the pain; whenever he sang for example my favourite track of his, "Love In Vain", it never fails to tug at my heart whenever I hear it as you can feel the despair as he sings about a lost love. He was also a brilliant guitarist sometimes sounding like two guitarists playing at the same time which some have attributed to his larger and longer than average hands and fingers. Truly a shame that he died so young as yet another artist that you'd expect even more great things from had he lived long enough.

ROBERT JOHNSON KING OF THE DELTA BLUES SINGERS PART TWO CBS/COLUMBIA RECORDS PC 30034 - I've been listening to various releases of the Robert Johnson recordings and these reissues the Columbia transcriptions are by far the best. At the cost of leaving in more of the hiss and scratches, the timbre of Johnson's voice has more depth, is less muffled, and sounds much more like a real human voice. The character of the voice and the nuances in inflections are more readily apparent. Of course, not the quality of modern recordings.  If you have any interst in the blues, these versions of these landmark recordings will you closer to Johnson's voice and guitar work.

Big Bill Broonzy (June 26, 1893 – August 15, 1958) was a prolific American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. His career began in the 1920s when he played country blues to mostly African-American audiences. Through the 1930s and 1940s he successfully navigated a transition in style to a more urban blues sound popular with working class African-American audiences. In the 1950s a return to his traditional folk-blues roots made him one of the leading figures of the emerging American folk music revival and an international star. His long and varied career marks him as one of the key figures in the development of blues music in the 20th century.

Broonzy copyrighted more than 300 songs during his lifetime, including both adaptations of traditional folk songs and original blues songs. As a blues composer, he was unique in that his compositions reflected the many vantage points of his rural-to-urban experiences

LIGHTIN' HOPKINS STRIKES VEE JAY LP 1044 - Back in 1966, when I was 15 or 16 years old, amidst all of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Motown, folk music, folk-rock, Dylan's-gone-electric, blah-blah-blah, this and that music on the radio, I stumbled across this record. I think I paid a dollar for it, which was a lot of money for a guy who was making $1.05 bagging groceries at a local market. I must have listened to that thing until the needle on my record player wore the vinyl raw. Sitting in the basement of my house - the only place I could be alone for extended periods of time - I played along with my out-of-tune Stella guitar. I let Hopkins guitar playing and Texas-blues voice swim through me. Everyone has a starting point. I heard a few things about Lightnin' Hopkins and I believed all of it. I heard someone found Lightnin' Hopkins poor, forgotten, and hungry. I hard this record was made in a hotel room with a big old reel-to-reel tape recorder. I heard he was some old man deep in Texas. I have no idea if any of that is true. All I know is that now, when I look at that photo, I see a man far younger than I am today, and the music is the same as it was 46 years ago. It's raw, no flash, and like a window into the man's soul.

Jimmy Reed is one the most highly-rated blues artists, having inspired such rock stars artists as the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. I'm Jimmy Reed, released in 1958 by Vee Jay, was his first album for the label and features such Reed classics as "Honest I Do," "Ain't That Lovin' You Baby" and "You Don't Have To Go," recorded in company with the likes of Eddie Taylor and Earl Phillips.

Jimmy was one of 10 children born of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Reed of Leland, Mississippi. At the age of 7, he was able to pick out tunes on a guitar that caught his fancy. He left home at age 15 and at age 22 was a laborer in an iron foundry in Gary, Indiana. He spent his lunch hours practicing guitar and singing — eventually leaving his job seeking work as a blues singer on Chicago's South and West sides. He was signed by the newly formed Vee-Jay label in June 1953. His first recording session in December of that year produced a classic and his all-time rhythm and blues hit "You Don't Have To Go."

 OTIS SPANN - WALKING THE BLUES - Otis Spann was the piano player in the famous Muddy Waters blues band in Chicago from 1953 to 1969. On this record we get a chance to listen to Otis Spann singing and playing the piano solo (accompanied by a guitar only). 40 years have passed since this recording was made. Looking back I have to confess that in my judgement Otis Spann was the greater talent of the two. Today, the music of Otis Spann is still fresh, original and timeless in its deep "soulfulness" while in comparison, the music of Muddy Waters sounds to me dated and somewhat artificial in its heavy reliance on the "electrified" sound of the guitar. According to Waters, Spann "is the best blues piano player we have today. There is no one left like him who plays the real, solid, bottom blues" (a quote from an interview given by Waters in the late 1960's). Waters also liked to emphasize that Spann played the piano "with both hands" (refering to the strong and articulate left hand in Spann's piano playing). Otis Spann died rather young at the age of 40 in 1970 appearently as a poor man, while Muddy Waters continued his successful career until his death in 1983 at the age of 68.

MUDDY WATERS - KING BEE - Out of Print BLUE SKY/CBS LABEL PZ37064 LP -

Muddy Waters' final album, KING BEE is the last of the three late-seventies/early eighties-albums produced by Texas blues guitarist Johnny Winter, -- its two excellent predecessors, "Hard Again" and "I'm Ready. 66-year old Waters is backed by virtually the same band that he worked with on "Hard Again" and "I'm Ready", and the arrangements are superb, making even somewhat mediocre songs like the light-weight "Champagne And Reefer" and the generic "Too Young To Know" work quite well. :

There's the classic, shuffling "Mean Old Frico Blues", Muddy Waters' fine take on Slim Harpo's "King Bee", the slow blues "Sad Sad Day", the supremely funky "(My Eyes) Keep Me In Trouble", and the acoustic masterpiece "I Feel Like Going Home" (superb Son House-inspired slide guitar playing by Johnny Winter). The power and brute force of Muddy ripping through these great is something to behold. A good collection of solid, professionally executed blues music which will certainly appeal to Muddy-fans.

MUDDY "MISSISSIPPI"WATERS - LIVE with JOHNNY WINTER ON GUITAR - Out of Print PRESSING FROM THE ORIGINAL LABEL RE-ISSUE CBS BLUE SKY RECORDS SEALED LP and one of the last pieces left in the world from this final pressing.-

The audience is totally into it, both on this song and the entire album--screaming, yelling, whistling, shouting--making this almost as exciting as "James Brown at the Apollo," and certainly among the best live blues ever recorded. 

The group is unbelievably talented and plays with great empathy: Muddy Waters on vocals and guitar, "Pine Top" Perkins (piano), James Cotton (harp), additional guitar from Johnny Winter, Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson, and many others. I don't hear any softening of Muddy Waters' voice; he is as authoritative, soulful, and unique as ever. Muddy Waters set a very high (probably unsurpassed) standard for anyone who followed. It's sheer delight to hear his inventive singing and slide guitar so well recorded and backed.

Perhaps the most memorable concert I ever attended was a late 1970's performance at the Roxy in L.A. As Muddy Waters walked up to the stage, I felt a sense of transcendentalism, as if History were climbing the stairs. And then he tore the roof off. Although only about 40 minutes long (and with notes limited to personnel descriptions), the music on this ALBUM recaptured some of that experience for me.

Along with "Mannish Boy" and the great "She's Nineteen Years Old," other Morganfield compositions (there's one number written by Sonny Boy Williamson) include "Streamline Woman," "Baby Please Don't Go," "Howling Wolf," and "Deep Down in Florida." 'Wolf' features Waters' bee-stingingly intense slide guitar, one that can righteously cut through the thickest, meanest heart and soul. With just a few perfectly played notes, Waters' slide guitar dredges buckets of emotion. "Gainesville'--perhaps the best song here ("Yeah I believe I'll go back to Gainesville...just to see an old friend of mine.")--has amazing solos by "Pine Top" Perkins, Johnny Winter, and James Cotton, who blows some of the purest and most stirring harp notes in blues.

This is the liturgy of the blues, the thick ooze of the traditional and the familiar wrapped with enough personal style to uncover new emotion. Powerful, raw, and spine tingling, this is the blues as only McKinley "Muddy Waters" Morganfield could play it.
