Description
The Warlocks - this is not an official release of the band’s (the Grateful Dead), nor are these recordings from the October 1989 Hampton, VA shows (tickets to which marketed and sold under the name “the Warlocks”). These are recordings of the Grateful Dead when they first started out in 1965 as the Warlocks. Caveat: I no longer have an LP player, and have not listened to this record in over 35 years, but if I recall correctly, the first side contains studio recordings of the songs listed, while I believe the second side is live. The back cover of the album has “May 3, 1965 Los Angeles” written on it. However Dead Base has no record of the “Warlocks” playing on May 3, 1965, and in fact has them playing on May 5, 1965 at Magoo’s Pizza Parlor in Menlo Park (pretty far from LA). Dead Base does not have the band playing in LA until February of 1966, so I’m pretty sure that date is wrong.
In addition, I’m pretty sure Phil is playing with them and his first gig with the band wasn’t until June 18, 1965. Also the song labeled “Confusion Prince” is actually “Mindbender.” And I believe “Walking in The Sun” is actually “The Only Time is Now.” I also don’t recall what “Untitled” is as the last song on the album.
Note: The outer cardboard cover shows some slight wear - in particular the upper left corner (see photos). The Album/LP is in excellent (I’d say mint) condition. I only played it a handful of times before taping it and just listening to the cassette. And I bought it new and have stored it (in smoke and pet free homes) in a plastic sleeve and standing upright (not stacked) along with all my other albums. Also, please note the album “cover” actually folds over and is not enclosed on all four sides (which is why I had stored it in a plastic sleeve) - see photos. It’s in its original inner (paper) sleeve, which has discolored a little and is crinkly in the corners (see last couple of photos), but you can get new inner sleeves pretty easily/inexpensively. If you look at the photo of the album on one side (it’s a blank label so I don’t know if it’s side 1 or 2), it looks like the whole in the middle was “mispunched” or “widened”, but that is not the case. So I took a close up of it so you can see what actually happened was they were off center when they put the label on and part of the label covered up the whole, so they punctured the part of the label that covered the whole to “correct the situation.” It does not impact play at all.in fact if you look at the other side we’re the label is centered correctly you can see the album is “unscathed.
Anyway - if you are lucky enough to have an LP player/stereo system, love vinyl records, and are interested/intrigued in hearing the Grateful Dead at their humble beginning (I was going to say “if you love the Grateful Dead, but let’s be honest this isn’t American Beauty or 5/8/77 or Europe ‘72, etc…) I think you will enjoy this album (and I’ll bet it will get more valuable with age if kept in this condition).
