TheTradewinds was a pioneering Caribbean band formed in 1966 in Toronto, Canada, led by Dave Martins from Guyana. The pan-Caribbean group was composed of musicians fromvarious Caribbean islands, including Clive Rosteing from Trinidad and Tobago(drums and vocals), Jeff Japal from Grenada (keyboards), Richard Terry from theCayman Islands (bass), and Harry Cupid from Barbados (percussion and vocals)
Theband was known for their witty songs that vividly described Caribbeanlifestyle, using local dialects and addressing real issues like theGuyana-Venezuela border conflict. They were pioneers in bringing Caribbeanmusic to Canada, performing a calypso-heavy blend that was unique at the time. Over their career, the Tradewinds recorded 22 albumsand performed more than 5,000 live shows.
