Label Conditions: Both are very clean, fresh and attractive with spindle marks being a little less than moderate. These being generally fine with only modest visibility, seen more with angled viewing.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 144 grams. A typical fine weight for this record.

Rarity: An album that sold well which was no major surprise. Both early mono and stereo copies however are less easy to find in clean conditions – that is the cover, inner sleeve and record (of course). These types were subjected to heavy usage on vintage record players and few survive really nice these days, especially the mono version. Finding the mono version with clear focused sound with minimal surface noise or scratches are difficult. This is a highly complex recording and is easily damaged by less than worthy equipment. This one has very little unwanted and offers very enjoyable sound, this played on very sensitive stereo equipment for which it was not really designed. Also this very early pressing has the rarer cover variant. Still made by Robert Stace, but this has the much thinner card with the more shiny finish laminate. Also the artwork is considerable deeper in shade, notably seen on the blue border of the front. Also the spine text is inverted as seen in close-up. I have seen very few of these before and they are much rarer and delicate than the ‘standard’ Robert Stace version. Lastly, the inner sleeve is totally unsplit and hard little creasing. This being ultra thin and fragile, few remain as such, it even has avoided ringwear which again most seem to acquire. So overall, this is a more unusual and very early copy in very fine all-round condition.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This Rolling Stones will forever be compared to The Beatles Sgt Pepper - their 1967 psych album, many of the major acts of this time were producing albums in this style. Satanic Majesties has never received the full recognition I believe it really deserves. For sure, a massive change of direction from the previous albums and it all may have been too much for many of their fans. Often described as a ‘flawed classic’, but I have heard few flaws myself. A brave and compelling album, a little weird (by their standards) for sure but many moments and songs of true genius - ‘She’s a Rainbow’ and ‘2000 light years from Home’ always sound so much better on this ‘proper’ album rather than compilations, and both songs remain personal favourites within their singles catalogue. This album is a barrage of sound with brass, psychedelia and effects and for The Stones, a real one-off. For me it’s one of those albums that’s totally essential in both mono and stereo as they sound very different. The mono version offers a more punchy sound with greater bass depth and warmth – the detail and mix are also different. The stereo version has wonderful imagery and presence – and of course separation. For me, impossible to say which is ‘better’, as they are quite different. But for sure, the mono version is one of the true greats in that mode and absolutely essential and highly sort-after. This a very early example and one that does it strong justice.

Cover Condition and Details: NEAR EXCELLENT: and this being quite critical, in terms of wear, this has little. With the very famous 3D textured plastic tile cover on a very thin card front, this is highly prone to bowing and avoiding it is nigh-om impossible. A gatefold format with a laminated front and back. The inside is matt, unprotected and smooth. It is the early-made original with NO back peep-hole mono/stereo indicator and was printed and made in England by Robert Stace. As mentioned further up, this is the rarer inverted text spine version with thinner gauge card with deep colour hue to all the graphics. Includes the red and white inner sleeve.

Cover Lamination: This has always been a difficult cover and it can and does vary considerably in manufacture. This rarer early variant has the thinner single thickness card front which is more prone to bowing and laminate issues. Here it is solidly adhered both sides with barely any lifting. It retains a deep shine with a more natural glossy finish than subsequent laminate finishes, the colour of the artwork is much deeper and intense. The front has bowed a little which is purely natural almost depending on conditions on a day-to-day basis, hotter weather, as per when tapping out this listing, makes it bow a little more. Both sides retaining genuine freshness and clarity and without the often seen adhesion crinkles in manufacture. The back looks stunning and has hardly any creasing or dulling, the front has a moderate crease near the bottom right corner but little else. Some corner tip rubbing and a little chipping on the edges in places. But when all considered, both sides still look impressive.

The 3D Picture: This famous feature is also in very fine condition, it has just a few very fine hairlines seen more under light, and I have seldom seen any without any as a bare minimum. Also this one has less fogging than many I have seen and also nicely and positioned on the front being almost perfectly square. Some are seen showing the guides that I know lie beneath, I guess these were applied and stuck on by hand and look less attractive if off-square. As stated above, a little bowed due to the humid weather currently in the UK, this could easily lie flat when cooler air returns. A natural trait from the adhesive to this famous cover feature.

Cover Inner Gatefold: In terms of wear, this centrefold has barely any at all. The colour of the gorgeous artwork rich, clean and deep. Barely any creasing bar the same one as the front and no ringwear, just a little rubbing near the very edges in places.

Top Edges: A little gentle patchy rubbing to the back. The thin fragile front still crisp and a little bowed especially as seen viewed end-on. If kept inside a plastic protective cover, this will easily lie flat (and one provided of course).

Bottom Edges: More moderate rubbing on the back closed edge, then largely as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: These are again very neat, a mere trace of thickening but without any burring of any real note. The record enters on the back and no trimming or enhancements guaranteed to either edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, and unusually, very straight with no compression or tilt. Folded square so the edges meeting up closely and parallel, just the right edges a fraction short. One moderate chip, any others small, few and light but the ends have rubbed. As seen and mentioned already, this has the rarer inverted spine text as seen in close-up, all perfect and unworn with the mono catalogue number. The few chips and ends apart, all laminate retained with no flaking, this remains very smooth to the touch.

Corners: Light to moderate corner rubs with fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: I cannot reitterate enough just how difficult this cover is. Even if stored carefully and little handled, it can be badly affected by temperature and humidity. At this moment in time, a little bowed due to considerably humidity in the UK, this I know will settle down when cooler weather arrives – all normal and near unavoidable on this cover. A strong all-round example, not for the perfectionist but this much rarer mono variant example will take a fair degree of beating and many collectors will enjoy it.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and as delicate an inner as you will ever find, similar to the ‘Pepper’ inner and equally as fragile. An integral part of this set, made from ultra thin paper, non-lined, this is rarely seen untorn or split and often with heavy ring wear from the thick Decca record. This one has barely any rubbing at all and retains rich, deep and fresh colour. It is totally devoid of edge splits and has NO repairs, that is IMMENSELY unusual. Edge repairs are very easy spotted as any applied adhesive will harden and can be felt with the fingertip, so I always state with absolutely honesty if I make any minor repairs to inners. The lack of creasing or ageing is great news, any crinkle gentle and light, clearly the owner did not store the record inside this for any length of time and this is up there with the very best I have seen.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: and arguably undergraded as such, any surface marks are very light and faint as seen more critically under bright angled light. There are no penetrating scratches with any minor blemishes superficial and non-sounding. This is a top quality Decca pressing, with very thick vinyl and deeper, wider grooves. The music information lies safely beneath any light surface marks that few very popular records of this vintage seem to avoid. Compare to many popular mono 1960s records, most seen are swathed in grubby fingermarks, with inground debris and deep penetrating scratches. This is nothing remotely like that and sound quality remains very high. An early very solidly pressed unboxed stereo copy that has a very fine shine and even freshness. Played a few times for sure, but avoiding traumas or accidents. Remember, just one arm-drop, jolt or careless arm placement usually means a ruined or written-off record. Many vintage record players tracked at almost unthinkable weights – 10+ grams for mono was considered mandatory – so even minor slip-ups often proved fatal for the record. Often grooves stripped by chipped or worn sapphire stylus stubs inflicting invisible wear to the sound – all avoided here again. A record more often seen played to near destruction with sound the same. This a lovely record that gives few clues to vintage and mode, it should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: A supreme piece of recording and engineering with incredible detail and effects. This record plays with very impressive sound that will never be beaten by modern digital formats. Very powerful and detailed audio quality with that lovely warm, punchy mono sound that has clearly different fine details to the stereo version. Big and bold in dynamics and unique mix and production, both formats are essential. It has terrific genuine high fidelity sound, any audio blemishes are minimal. Any surface sound minimal, very gentle and highly infrequent – a trace near the snoring part on side one, this quite common. Less common is the clarity and focus of the difficult opening grooves to each side, both here impresisve wand clean. The sound on this album is special and it remains one of the most sort-after mono-mode albums ever made. Even the quieter passages play well with little unwanted – the odd surface trace apart that is near impossible to avoid totally when played on a very revealing Linn/Naim/B&W set-up. The voices are recorded loud and forward and they rarely avoid clipping, but again, this has been avoided which tells me it has never been exposed to any worn or chipped stylus – that crucial beyond words. Even the shouted voices at the start of side two are sharp and focused and not masked by crackle as many are – an intense and difficult start to a record side. Just holding that vintage cover and hearing the in-built power of this vintage Decca record will please. These grooves portray almost zero wear and sound is polished, focused and sharp, and importantly enjoyable. The lack of distortion a hugely important factor as are the lack of pops or significant clicks. Truthfully, will any record like this ever offer 100 per cent silent sound?, if that is wanted, the digital formats offer just that, but will lack that warmth, punch, depth and detail only the early pressed records can, and as far as I know, the true mono mix still unique to vinyl. Like Beatles albums, this, and other Stones albums are so often seen totally trashed and unplayable, hearing this still lovely copy is like a breath of fresh air compared to many. I will never state ‘pristine’ or ‘perfect’, but I consider this a very strong and near exceptional example, and it’s a really challenging recording and I enjoyed it immensely. A super copy and I feel many fans and collectors will treasure it. Not quite for the perfectionists, but it merits strong recommendation and will take some beating. .

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
