Label/Format: Decca – original format unboxed red format (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive. Spindle marks are light and very light, fine and faint. In terms of this vintage mono record, very light indeed. A popular album of the day and so many are seen obviously played many times, some to the point of destruction with unlistenable sound. All evidence suggests this has been played only lightly and with utmost care. A point reinforced still further by a superb cover that rarely wears well.

Cat Number: LK 4661.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 141 grams. A typical solid Decca record.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Moderate in theory, most all Rolling Stones albums sold well but it’s the conditions that make the difference. The 1960s unboxed copies were most likely to have been played heavily on heavy tracking record players. Hence so few are seen with little usage and still offering very fine sound. So often seen in covers badly aged, creased with major laminate issues. This was made with thin card and seldom stands the test-of-time well. The cover on this copy is the much rarer flipbacked version and includes the later withdrawn ‘Blind Man’s’ text (as seen in close-up. As clearly seen, the text refers to stealing a blind man’s wallet after a blow and kick which (with justification) was deemed offensive. The text was pasted over on original covers and then omitted altogether when reprinted – a bit like The Beatles’ ‘Yesterday and Today’ ‘Butcher’ Cover in the United States. I have seldom seen a blind man flipbacked version and never one in better condition. Both record and cover are pretty exceptional and such examples can be deemed pretty rare.

Brief Info: Most interested collectors will know all about this title already and needs no introductions suffice to say, it was their second album from 1965. I will concentrate more on its condition.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: very thin card and rarely seen devoid of major laminate issues. This is a really impressive example.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with a Clarifoil laminated front that wraps around the closed edges and ends on two rear flipbacks. The back spine edge has one inch of laminate which is unusually wide for a laminate end. Printed and made in England by James Upton and includes the infamous ‘Blind Man’ text (as seen in close-up).

Lamination & Front: Not seen too many better than this – this front is very attractive indeed with any blemishes tiny, few and faint. The surface retains a lovely surface shine – more a semi-gloss rather than mirror-like which is normal on this one. Even under light, barely any traces of dulling or friction rubs and almost incredibly, all is fully adhered with no lifting or blisters. Any creasing is very fine, light and few. Mainly just a few fine hairline types around the edges, mostly the spine and finding one with fewer will prove massively difficult. Super clarity and freshness, the band profiles dark and looking marvellous. Just a tiny surface mark near the right edge a fraction below half way down (but look hard). These thin card covers often bow badly too, this has avoided that as well, any traces of, tiny. It will take an extraordinary example to better this.

Cover Back: The immediate attractiveness of this more unusual back will be instant. It has barely worn at all with just a tiny, minuscule tone spot trace and little else. The spine edge with it’s 1 inch wide laminate end is fantastic and any blemishing to those two fragile flipbacks is almost non-existent. Still a fine shade of white with barely any grubbiness or ageing and any creasing so fine and faint, any hardly even show. Any trace of record rim impression front or back is equally faint, and both look exceptional.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both ultra smooth and unrubbed or scuffed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very light and faint and considering how thin this card is, this is a remarkably clean edge. Record enters here.

Spine and Text: The spine has little rear wear but does have some compression, the only reason I have marked this down a little. Again, being so thin, few will avoid some compression. Still solid and all text is unworn under clear, unpeeled laminate.

Corners: All in great shape and devoid of any noteworthy wear and all retain excellent neat shape and pointed definition.

Cover Summary: A hugely impressive all-round example of this very fragile cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. Much harder to find with flipbacks and with the original text. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: but darkened with age. Little real wear however with two very crisp and neat window circles and ultra clear polylining. Hardly any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This is British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): ultra critical graded and this barely does this justice. A record more often seen played to destruction with swathes of spindle marks, badly marked or scratched playing surfaces and aged dulled vinyl This is a superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. Any surface traces are very fine and super-faint, there are no penetrating marks on this record at all and without any doubt, it has been played very little – and then, with utmost care. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic record plays up to and even above its high visual grading with pactically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. Although hardly a hi-fi masterpiece this has a lovely raw production that was just perfect for it’s vintage and will seldom be heard cleaner or better than this from an unboxed copy. Any surface sounds are few and ultra gentle and no pops or clicks were noted and overall, this is an exceptional clean pressing. No piledriver thick, heavy mono stylus have ruined this one. I doubt if it has seen light-of-day for decades. Few available copies will match or better this significantly I feel sure. It is the best I have seen for some considerable time and the all-round package will take some beating. Both channels are clean and sharp (often mono records have one clean channel and one noisy, not here), I am certain this record has been played very modestly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, this too being played on very sensitive stereo equipment. This copy could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
