Label/Format: Decca – matt smooth surfaces withe boxed logo. This one being somewhat unusual being black and white with the small size label size. Not one I have personally seen before and I would doubt too many of these were made. Like some versions of 'Get Yer Ya Yas Out' on the same label design, this was very likely made for the export market (Please see my label pictures).

Label Conditions: Both in beautiful conditions: ultra clean, fresh and highly attractive with any spindle traces tiny, very few and faint. This beautiful record appears hardly even played, reitterated by superb clean sound.

Cat Number: SKL 4786.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 134 grams. A very good weight and a typical top-quality Decca pressing.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Not too hard to find being honest, Rolling Stones records sold in vast numbers just like The Beatles. But finding early copies – and in vinyl terms, this is still an early one – in barely played conditions is far harder. Again, like The Beatles, these were immensely popular and most were heavily played – purchased to be used and enjoyed. This record is barely even run-in in vinyl terms and that is far more unusual, also on this far more unusual Decca black and white format.

Original Year of Release: 1966. This one from the early 1970s. The inner date-coded 8-71.

Matrix Nos: SMA XZAL-7209-1W / XZAL-7210-2W

Musicians: Mick Jagger – lead vocals, backing vocals, harmonica, percussion; Brian Jones – guitar, slide guitar, marimbas, bells, dulcimer, koto, harmonica, keyboards; Keith Richard – guitar and backing vocals; Charlie Watts – drums, percussion, marimba; Bill Wyman – bass guitar, marimba, organ. Guests: Jack Nitzsche – percussion, piano, organ, harpsichord; Ian Stewart – piano and organ.

Brief Info: Most interested collectors will know all about this title already and needs no introductions suffice to say, it was their fourth album from 1966 and one of their longest on a single album. This clocks in at around 53 minutes aided by the 11 minute 35 seconds ‘Goin’ Home’ that ends side one. The labels on this rarer copy indicate it was made for export, I have been told for the Scandinavian market with a few issued in Europe as well. Other than that,  I will concentrate more on it’s condition.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and apart from a small scuff on the back, this is way better looking than my over-cautious grading. The front grades a superb EX++. A single format with a Clarifoil laminated front that wraps around the spine and closed edges ending on the spine.The back is unprotected with a matt, smooth finish. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace and made with typically thin card that was very vulnerable and highly prone to creasing and laminate issues.

Lamination & Front: A very impressive front that has very little to fault. Ultra clean, fresh with shiny, clear laminate that has no lifting and only minimal faint dulling around the rim seen under light. Any surface marks very small and faint with just one small fine half moon surface crease. Any others are super-fine and faint. The artwork graphic retains rich deep colour and this front really is beautiful.

Cover Back: The unprotected back has aged little with any grubbiness gentle and light. A small scuff a fraction right of centre with any other blemishes very few and faint. Minimal rim impression and barely any creasing, even the laminate end on the spine edge is neat with barely any hint of grubbiness.

Top Edge: Unworn, ultra smooth and straight.

Bottom Edge: As above with just one microscopic surface chip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp and guaranteed untrimmed, with barely any wear, just the odd tiny burr trace viewed end-on. The exposed white strip where the laminate ends slightly short of full width is ultra clean with no grime-line formation. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal traces of compression. All text is perfect and unworn with full laminate retention that has barely any creasing at all.

Corners: All retain superb pointed shape with barely any traces of wear.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this typically fragile cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): this record includes a blue Decca polylined inner in super shape with barely any wear or significant ageing. A little darkening of the seam adhesive on these inners is near impossible to avoid. Two immaculate crisp and sharp window circles and the lining very clear and solid. All edges unsplit with no repairs, any creasing little and very light. This is date-coded 8-71.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and a truly beautiful example of this elusive 'export' copy with very few visual blemishes. Any surface marks are ultra fine and faint as seen with utmost scrutiny under bright angled light. A lovely visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed, and as always, on the finest quality Decca vinyl. A very little played copy, vintage Rolling Stones records rarely get seen quite like this these days. Most a swathe of marks with scruffy labels – chalk and cheese – and there’s the difference. A copy barely even run-in in record terms, how many available copies remain so little used? Visually a super record that should please all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. By now the Stones productions were getting more polished and this was just perfect for it’s vintage and will seldom be heard cleaner or better than this. No surface sound, pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. No piledriver thick, heavy stylus have ruined this one, I doubt if it’s seen daylight for decades, just the way modern audiophile and discerning collectors want them. Few copies will better this, remember this is into it’s fifth decade. Clearly well stored and carefully handled and still a copy of rare beauty. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
