UK FIRST PRESSING MONO HEAVY VINYL LP IN UNLAMINATED 'GARROD & LOFTHOUSE' FLIP-BACK SLEEVE WITH ORIGINAL GLASSINE INNER SLEEVE. This disc weighs in at a splendid 158 grams, thick, flat and deeply pressed - Pye cuttings of this era were excellently mastered and pressed and this particular copy actually plays as great as it looks for once.
Ah, the Kinks...always playing third fiddle to the 'big' boys: the Beatles and the Stones - The Kinks and The Who seemed to hover one-step behind most of the time, perhaps they weren't on the 'right' labels - after all, EMI and Decca ruled the roost in Britain during the 1960s, whilst Pye and Reaction / Track were much smaller labels. To a certain degree, the Kinks still remain a best-kept secret of sorts. Ray Davies was probably the finest, wittiest, most observant and succinct British popular songwriter throughout the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s. His songs have a lasting quality, an in-built nostalgia for a time that probably never existed in the first place. The Kinks were the definitive 'singles band' - scoring hit after hit with clever, erudite and tuneful pop-rock songs. Even Davies' 'lesser' hits, like 'Wonder Boy', were better than the biggest hits by lesser bands. Oddly, the Kinks never seemed to transition into an 'albums band' despite some brilliant LPs, most of which either failed to chart, or only briefly at low positions. One such example was 'Something Else By the Kinks', which managed an almost apologetic appearance at #35 in the UK album chart.
Despite featuring two enormous hit singles, 'Waterloo Sunset' and 'Death of a Clown', the album was as good as ignored when it was released in 1967. It was not as majestic and outlandish as the Beatles' 'Sgt. Pepper', but musically it is just as good, and some of Davies' songs are vastly superior. Kinks albums like this one, alongside 'Face to Face' and 'Village Green', are so hard to find in decent shape these days, let alone in as wonderful a condition as the copy we are proud to offer to a new owner of this gem. We rarely see copies of this particular Kinks album anywhere, it is definately one of the hardest to find for some reason. This copy is in the best condition for a 1960s Kinks album that we have had the pleasure of offering for sale for more years than we care to remember. It has only a few rather minor blemishes, but other than that, it looks almost as if it came home from a record store a some months ago, got played a few times, then put on the shelf and forgotten about. Except that that was in 1967, and it's now 2013. You may just be able to find a better copy than this one, there's always something a little better out there, but tracking that down is going to be difficult. We can honestly say that, for most Kinks fans, this copy of 'Something Else' is probably the best one they will ever own, and it would be a significant upgrade for nearly every serious fan who does own an original copy. It is a real put-it-in-the-bank-vault keeper copy. At this time in the 21st Century, it is becoming nigh-on impossible to find really clean copies of LPs like this by classic bands of the 1960s. Long gone are the charity/thrift shop/car boot/swap meet finds of 20 years ago - these records, in this condition, only ever turn up in well-preserved record collections by serious collectors who, for one reason or another (divorce and downsizing being the most frequent reasons) decide to sell up their decades of collecting and hording. If you look after this copy, it should continue to increase in value as long as great 1960s British rock bands' records are collected.

SLEEVE: VERY GOOD+, JUST A LITTLE SHORT OF EXCELLENT MINUS. THIS SILVER-GREY UNLAMINATED THREE REAR FLIP-BACKS SLEEVE IS SO PRONE TO WEAR THAT MOST COPIES ARE A DISASTER THESE DAYS. THIS ONE HAS THE LIGHTEST OF SHELF AND EDGE WEAR ON THE FRONT, MINOR CORNER WEAR, AND TWO SMALL CREASES IN THE TOP RIGHT AND LEFT SIDE CORNERS. THE GORGEOUS GREEN LETTERING IS BRIGHT AND CLEAR. WE NEVER REALISED HOW DELIGHTFUL THE GRAPHICS ON THIS SLEEVE WERE UNTIL THEY WERE EXAMINED UNDER A STRONG LIGHT, THEY ARE UP THERE WITH THE YES LOGO BY ROGER DEAN ON THE FRONT OF THE ORIGINAL 'CLOSE TO THE EDGE' SLEEVE - SO SUBTLE, SO REFINED, THAT YOU ALMOST OVERLOOK THEM - ANOTHER TYPICAL KINKS UNDER-DOG SCENARIO, EVEN THE ARTWORK ON THEI BARELY SELLING LPS WENT OVERLOOKED. THE REAR IS EVEN BETTER THAN THE FRONT, ALL THE FLIP-BACKS ARE TIGHT AND CLEAN. IT IS LOVELY TO BEHOLD AS IT LOOKS ALMOST NEW. THERE IS ONE SMALL AREA OF THE MAROON INK USED IN THE LETTERING IN THE SILVER GREY AREA AT 1 O'CLOCK INSIDE THE MIDDLE CIRCLE, BUT THIS IS IN THE ACTUAL SLEEVE ITSELF AND WE HAVE SEEN THIS ON MANY OTHER COPIES SO IT IS A PRINTERS' SMUDGE OF SOME SORT. THE GLASSINE INNER SLEEVE IS VERY GOOD+, JUST MINOR WEAR WITH A SMALL NICK ON ONCE OF THE CIRCLE DIE- CUTS.
DISC: EXCELLENT MINUS. NO SCRATCHES AND ABSOLUTELY MINIMAL SPINDLE WEAR, JUST A FEW LIGHT HAIRLINES AND ONE LIGHT MARK ON 'FUNNY FACE' WHICH CANNOT BE FELT AND DOES NOT SOUND. THE DISC HAS CLEARLY BEEN PLAYED A FEW TIMES BUT NOT MUCH, IT HAS OBVIOUSLY NOT BEEN SUBJECTED TO THOSE AWFUL HEAVY-STYLUS RECORD PLAYERS OF THE ERA, FORTUNATELY. THE MAGENTA AND BLACK PYE LABELS ARE SUPER-CLEAN ON BOTH SIDES. A SPLENDID PLAYING COPY, WITH DEEPLY PRESSED GROOVES THAT OFFER TRULY SUPERB AUDIO. NO SKIPS OR JUMPS, NO NOTICEABLE GROOVE WEAR, AND NO DETRIMENTAL SURFACE NOISES. WE DOUBT WE WILL EVER HAVE A COPY THIS GOOD FOR SALE AGAIN AND FEEL THAT IT SHOULD SATISFY ALL BUT A PERFECTIONIST.
