The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan - Rare Radio Demo Mono LP
This is a very rare and highly collectable radio station demo release of the album that made Bob Dylan famous. I am the original owner, who purchased it early in 1963. The original version of the album had four tracks that were quickly replaced before the album was commercially issued. When these tracks were replaced by those that appear on the final commercial release, the first demos were sent out with tracks 3 (Masters of War) and 6 (A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall) reversed. A replacement disc was then sent out with the tracks in the “proper” final order, though, inexplicably, these replacements carried a note (shown below) that referred to the original by noting that “…on Side 1, Band 3 and Band 6 are reversed.” In fact, they are not on this pressing. While the total number of variants is not large, Alan Fraser has noted on the website searchingforagem.com:
“This record exists in bewildering variations, in that there are copies which list the original tracks but play the replacement tracks, and copies which look like exactly the standard release, but play the original tracks... All are very collectable, as are both mono and stereo original mint albums…”
This is clearly one of the highly collectable variations, though it has been played a number of times--mainly on a professional Fairchild (with a 15” transcription arm) or Bang & Oluffsen turntable. There are no gouges or deep scratches on the vinyl, and no excessive wear. The surface quality is extremely good, with no skips or pops and only minimal audible intrusion at any point. I doubt that there are many of this vintage in equivalent condition
The offering includes the original slipcase, disc (Mono CL 1986, Matrix Nos. 58717 and 58718) and the infamous inserted note. I believe the envelope is also original, since it is Columbia and of the period--but I can’t attest to that and don’t know how to find out. Please let me know if you have any questions.
