Description
“The End” began their existence in Surrey, England as “The Innocents”. They were a horn band that backed some of the local singers in town and also for more famous notables that toured the country like “The Four Seasons”. Robert Stigwood was their manager at the time and got them on the same bill with “The Rolling Stones” before they got famous. There was mutual respect between the bands. They had a friendship with Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts who offered them help in the music industry if it was ever needed. Stigwoods management firm folded within a few months and they were left out in the cold. “The Innocents” broke up leaving Dave Brown and Nick Graham to reform anew as “The End”. Honoring his pledge, Bill set them as opening act for “The Stones” first tour as headliner. He introduced them to Glyn Johns and they put down a few tunes as singles. They toured the rest of Europe and found a real following in Spain. By this time the horns were gone and they picked up Terry Taylor as (lead guitar). England was vibrant with psychedelic bands and it was their intention to follow suit. So, along with Terry on (guitar), there was Dave Brown (bass), Nicky Graham (keyboards), Colin Griffin (steel guitar) and Hugh Attwooll (drums). They went into the studio with Bill Wyman as producer and made a wonderful album with special effects, three part harmonies, psych guitar, echoes and storied interludes from Bill Wyman’s gardener (George Kenset). The album (Introspection) mimics those of “Skip Bifferty”, “The Action” and “The Small Faces – Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake”. Had the album been released right away, it would have made an impact. Unfortunately, Bill Wyman was busy with the surging “Rolling Stones” and could not devote marketing time to his project. It sat on the shelves for 18 months and even then had zero promotion. Pitted against Led Zeppelin, Cream and Hendrix it appeared rather light weight when it came out in the stores. The band split up amicably with Terry, Nicky and Dave reforming as “Tucky Buzzard” for 5 hard guitar rock albums. Subsequent early recordings and outtakes from the “Introspection” album sessions were released by the “Tenth Planet” label. “In The Beginning”, “Retrospection” and “The Last Word” all were limited releases in the 90’s. These outtakes and sessions were of completely different songs and may be as good or better than those used initially on the “Introspection” album. There’s heavy psych guitar and whimsical, magical meanderings like that of “Pink Floyd”, “The Hollies” and “The Zombies - Odyssey and Oracle”. It’s hard to believe how this band was overlooked.
This official release is on the USA London label. The foil Cover does have some obvious shelf wear and has a bend crease across the front. The Back Cover also has wear and a sticker that could not be removed. The Record plays with minor ticks here and there, so VG+(+). A great album.
