This incredibly young UK-Dutch five piece (vocals, bass, drums, lead guitar, rhythm guitar), aged around 18 were already on their 3rd album in 14 months! Tight, spirited, gig-seasoned and teenage outfit, with real song-writing resources, writing, recording and developing at break-neck speed, spreading themselves thin over too many albums and but for one song would probably have remained in absolute obscurity.
Like the Dave Clark Five or obscure Icelandic group Thor’s Hammer, they had mastered and imitated Beatles vocal harmonies. However they had their own thing going – a real Shel Talmy style garage attack long before they worked with Talmy and one of the best rhythm guitarists in the world at the time George Young.
The bass is simple but very effective and solidly forward in the mix. Drums routine and thinly recorded. Good Beatle-imprinted backing vocals. Very average lead vocals. Lead guitar is mostly run of the mill. But the Rhythm guitar – an instrument that remarkably few have ever really used to full deadly effect, is stunningly biting in a few places – this is what electric rhythm guitar is for – to set up a strong distinctive syncopated riff – precious few players seem to have grasped that trick.
Opener Sorry is a garage classic that kicks the ass of virtually anything the Yardbirds ever recorded – built on Young’s classic chucka chucka chucka chucka Dum Da DA DA riff! A similar approach on track six Not In Love With You. The other lost gem is the superb Beatle’s pastiche – You Said That, even better than the Knickerbockers Lies, with a great opening lead melody and that euphoric Beatlemania feel. The Last Day Of May is a proto-psy track. Side one is really strong, comfortable 4 star maybe 4.5, side two slips esp on 9-13 more 2.5 star bringing the set down to ***. There is virtually none (maybe 1) of the 12 bar blues, R&B style pot boilers that flesh out many / most 64-66 UK albums. The songwriting is genuine garage / pop stuff with at least some degree of ingenuity and originality in the chords and melodies.
If you like garage or the Beatle’s first five albums, this is a must have. Good garage and Beat-group albums by minor groups are a real rarity and this is vastly better than most merseybeat and beat-boom UK albums. Snap it up while you can
