LONDON CALLING - DOUBLE LP SET - Bursting at the seams with creative energy, the Clash's stunning 1979 double album more than made up for the artistic and commercial disappointment of its predecessor, 1978's tried-too-hard Give 'Em Enough Rope. With ex-Mott the Hoople producer Guy Stevens harnessing their sound as never before, the band yielded what proved to be the best work of their career. Bouncing from hard rock (the apocalyptic vision of the title track) to rockabilly ("Brand New Cadillac") to reggae ("Rudy Can't Fail") to pop (the Top 40 hit "Train in Vain"), the Clash knocked down all musical walls and, in the process, ended the argument over punk's viability in the U.S.

GIVE EM SOME ROPE - Despite the tepid production by metal guru Sandy Pearlman, the Clash's sophomore album, Give 'Em Enough Rope, manages to burn with white-hot intensity.  Rope finds the boys flexing their songwriting muscles. The first three songs ("Safe European Home," "English Civil War," and "Tommy Gun") stand among their most powerful and leap from the record with brute force. Though they hit a few clunkers ("Cheapskates"), this album is a near classic and gives a hint of the band to come that would light up the world with LONDON CALLING

Combat Rock was the Clash's biggest album. The amount of discs it sold made them one of the most popular bands of the early 80's. It also was the beginning of their downfall.
Egos got into the way of conquering the music world. According to Joe Strummer, Mick Jones was becoming difficult to work with. He wanted people to go through his lawyer. Strummer and Simonon (the band's bassist) felt that Jones had strayed away from the band's ideals.

The music on combat rock is a mixture of pop, punk, dance and synth-pop. Strummer tried to keep the music political and revelant whilst Jones wanted to add more beat and hip-hop. Allen Ginsburg (beat poet) appears on Ghetto Deffendant. The tracks range from a Nuclear Holocaust to
a song about Errol Flynn's son. Their most pop friendly album to date (even more so than London Calling).

A punk milestone. Some may prefer the U.K. version of this album, but this is the one I grew up with. So much has been written about the Clash, what more is there to say? They were the most important band of the U.K. punk scene. They had a different sound than most of their contemporaries. They played punk with a reggae influence. That influence is most clearly heard here on "Police & Thieves". This album has one great song after another. Buy this version just buy it.
