Label/Format: CBS – original intense orange colour with rough textured surfaces and ridge. Later ones where smooth (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean and highly attractive with only ultra light/very light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: 63169.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 144 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Very early pressed monos are scarce, especially in superb clean playing conditions. As I have stated on countless occasions, we all know what these vintage mono records were likely to be subjected too and the resulting damage to the fragile grooves and sound. It will be immediately obvious to any winning bidder this copy has hardly been played and retains immaculate mono sound, and that can never, ever be taken for granted. Buy any un-play-graded mono record at your peril because a high percentage will disappoint.

Brief Info: This was the fifth Byrds album and justifiably, a popular classic. Still their music progressed and includes elements or rock, folk, jazz, psychedelia and now more country sounds. However, there was now friction within the band but it had no effect on the outstanding quality of the music. It sold quite well on both the US and UK but finding the earliest mono pressings is harder in very fine conditions. This is a gem and should delight most collectors. Cover Grade and Format: An exceptional EX++. A single format with front laminate, this covers the top and bottom edges but not the spine, hence vulnerable and the majority will not include the text as it erodes so easily. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day and includes the ‘Patent Pending’ text. This dedicated mono cover has no stickers and is guaranteed original. This, and the other Byrds albums I am currently offering include the inners the records came with to me and I feel sure, they are all original.

Lamination & Front: The front is superb and really does look highly attractive. Very clear, shiny and fresh laminate, all is fully adhered with no lifting or peeling and any marks very few and tiny. Any of the few edge creases are tiny and faint also and barely even show. Very faint record impression, but with a heavy-pressed record inside for a span of five decades, is this a surprise?, with hardly any traces of friction rubs or dulling, this is great news and this front will prove very hard to find much better.

Cover Back: The back is truly exceptional and this is what makes the real difference to this cover. Very dark indeed and matt finished, this is very prone to just all forms of wear and mistreatment time and bad storage has to offer. Incredibly, this has little to fault with any marks being few and ultra faint. Any minor handling traces to the revealing surface are minor indeed and only seen with scrutiny under light. Few, if any would have worn gloves to handle this uncompromising sleeve would they? The lack of rubbing, ringwear and creasing makes this exceptional and this is quite possibly the best original example of this I have yet seen or had.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both show barely any wear up to the corner tips aided by the laminate protection that is still fully intact. Minor burr traces on the back panel end if being critical on the bottom storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight, uncompressed and all text is present and unworn. Slight discolouration to the white surface is rarely avoided.

Corners: Small tip rubs or minor chips only and most retain fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this wear-prone 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This one should please most collectors.

The Inner: Mint(-). The CBS promotional unlined inner is superb and has no edge splits (or repairs) at all, these are never easy to find like this. With no grubbiness or creasing and the window is immaculate, this is the icing on the cake for this wonderful album.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: A strong EX. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface blemishes being few, faint and very light. In terms of mono records these are minor indeed being faint hairlines of very low level paper scuffs that have no sound – few records this great age avoid these – fact. Visually a wonderful looking mono classic that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This delightful original mono record plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Still the era of the mono sound, this was a real joy to play-grade, any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Remember, these single-channel recordings were designed for the Dansette era and not for highly clinical and revealing high-end stereo decks. So when any vintage mono record plays to this very high standard, they are to be cherished. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean, sharp and fully focused and devoid of the typical clipping or mono noise encountered on so many. I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been mostly carefully handled, no blunt or chipped mono stylus have destroyed this one. Again remember, these old record players tacked at vast weights (often exceeding 10 grams!!), just one play on such and the sound is ruined, one arm drop or jolt, and another massive deeply penetrating scratch is inflicted, but not on this one. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, one of many treasures this wonderful band made. This record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
