Brief Info: Born Doris Elaine Higginsen, she was an American R&B singer and songwriter, she was known to some in the Northern Soul scene and often known affectionally as ‘Mama Soul’. This 1970 album is her most acclaimed and proved a one-off on The Beatles Apple label. It received high praise on issue, but sold poorly even with a host of class backing musicians that include Harrison, Starr, Clapton, Stills, Frampton and Preston – all listed above. With minimal promotion and the stunning backing line-up uncredited in a somewhat sparse information cover, the lack of success is hardly surprising. It can even be argued, even to this day, this could still be a somewhat undiscovered gem of an album for some. The album includes self-written material along with contributions from George Harrison and Stephen Stills and others. Seldom seen or offered as a 1970 original and this copy is in super condition – the record appears little played, and the massively revealing intense black cover cover highly impressive, even the inner sleeve is almost as made. As the 1970s progressed, Troy made many appearances with famous name artists and albums as a backing vocalist, including The Rolling Stones, Humble Pie, Kevin Ayers, Edgar Broughton, George Harrison, Dusty Springfield, Tom Jones, Nick Drake and Carly Simon. Her most famous being with Pink Floyd on their massive selling album ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’. This an important and top-class album in the Apple catalogue and genre, finding a better one will prove very difficult.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single fully laminated format. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: Highly revealing, but few negatives on this very well preserved thin card cover. The laminate retains a high gloss shine, freshness and clarity, with two other crucial factors. Those being the lack of creasing and lifting, both of which would have ruined the super appearance of this intense black cover. Any present are minimal, little and very light. Yes, a little dulling around the thickly pressed Apple record as seen more critically under angled light, but viewed normally full-on, little is seen and finding a better example with prove immensely difficult. The laminate has four distinct end-lines – one as usual on the front right, and three on the back, just the spine end is covered here. Even these black exposed strips are clean and showing minimal traces of chipping or rubs. These small details make the difference between average and exceptional, and given the revealing nature of this sleeve, I really do consider this one being the latter.

Top Edge: Thin, but straight, smooth and barely any hint of wear at all.

Bottom Edge: If anything, even better.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any hint of wear or thickening, even as viewed end-on, and do this reveals just how thin the card is. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, but very thin as the ultimate first-made examples were. But still quite straight with only modest compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, just a tiny chip near the top. Again for good measure, all the text is perfectly centred on a very narrow depth.

Corners: Four very crisp and neat corners, made all the more satisfying with such thin card. Barely any wear and better than excellent shape retained with no knocks, the odd gentle laminate crease being near impossible to avoid totally.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain white unlined inner that is practically as clean and fresh as new. A gentle semi-crease on one corner stops a full Mint(–) grade. Like the record, I doubt if this has seen light-of-day for decades. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a lovely vintage, and original Apple record that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence, a small few fine surface marks that do nothing. With critical viewing under bright angled light, a little minor dulling is seen within the pressing, but have no fears, this quality EMI-pressed record plays superbly with hardly anything unwanted. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This sadly overlooked album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. That sublime soulful voice perfectly crisp and fully intact with no loss of clarity at all. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, Doris Troy was a class act within her genre and this Apple record more than demonstrates the fact with strong material. This will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
