The "Butcher cover" (OOH THAT COVER!!)
In early 1966, photographer Robert Whitaker had The Beatles in the studio for a conceptual art piece entitled "A Somnambulant Adventure." For the shoot, Whitaker took a series of pictures of the group dressed in butcher smocks and draped with pieces of meat and body parts from plastic baby dolls. A photograph of the band smiling amid the mock carnage was used as promotional advertisements for the British release of the "Paperback Writer" single. In the United States, Capitol Records printed approximately 750,000 copies of Yesterday and Today with the same photograph as "Paperback Writer". A small fraction of the original covers were shipped to disc jockeys and store managers as advance copies. Reaction was immediate. The record was immediately recalled. All copies were ordered shipped back to the record label, leading to its collectability. It has been substantiated that the record was indeed for sale in some stores, including Wallich's Music City in Hollywood and some Sears stores, in limited areas and probably for only one day. Capitol initially ordered plant managers to destroy the covers, and the Jacksonville plant delivered most of its copies to an area landfill. However, faced with so many jackets already printed, Capitol quickly changed course and decided instead to paste a much more conventional cover over the old one. This new cover, showing the group posed around an open steamer trunk, had to be trimmed on the open end of the album jacket by about 1/8 inch to address problems where the new sheet, known as a "slick", was not placed exactly "square" on top of the original cover. Tens of thousands of these so-called "Trunk" covers were sent out. As word of this manoeuvre made the rounds, people attempted, usually unsuccessfully, to peel off the pasted-over cover of their copy of the album, hoping to reveal the original image hidden below.

CONDITION OF THE RECORD:
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, we grade ALL records under a strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight).
- WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR-MINT- (NEAR-MINT MINUS). The original luster is very much in tact, and the vinyl is beautiful with just a minimum of 'surface graying'//'hair-like' surface marks seen under bright light (some will not see this), only a few may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters). Beautiful, wear-free 'mono' labels. Winner and 'runner-up' should be happy with this one (winner and RUNNER UP each receives 'free CD' copy~ please see above or inquire).
- The record is pressed on a beautiful high quality, semi-flexible vinyl. Usually, the sound on such vinyl pressings is full-bodied, bright and rich in quality.
- The original luster is very much intact; the vinyl shows much of it's original shine.
- Record comes with Original 1966 inner-sleeve.
CONDITION OF THE COVER:
THE 'MONO' COVER IS VERY NICE; GRADED STRONG VG+
The following flaws or imperfections are found on the cover:
- Cover shows the smallest amount of corner wear (NOT significant). On a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of corner wear as a <1 .
- Cover shows little 'gray' wear - not significant. On a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of 'gray' wear as a 1> (front) and as a 2> (back).
- Cover (seams, spine), show little 'fading' wear (spine shows little peeling). On a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of seam, spine 'white' wear as a 1.
