Label/Format: Parlophone with matt surfaces that have a gentle hint of texturing. Format text detail as seen on my pictures. NOTE: however, this omits the final song text ‘A Day in the Life’ making this a far more elusive copy, these are not seen of offered anywhere near as often as the standard correct printed label versions.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with spindle marks light, very fine and faint. The record plays impressively with only a tiny light mark on ‘She’s Leaving Home’ causing a tiny few light ticks, that apart little else to fault with lovely clean mono sound.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of Record: 138 grams.

Rarity: Like most standard Beatles albums, this sold in vast numbers, even today, one of the most popular albums ever made. Condition is always of prime concern and finding very clean records with minimal usage is far harder. This copy includes the major label misprint that omits the final song ‘A Day in the Life’ – of course, the record itself still plays the song. These are a very sort-after variant for Beatles fans and collectors and are not seen often. It appears little used and plays impressively with few blemishes. The cover is simply superb as is the flame inner. It is stated in books and Net this version only included a plain white inner, perhaps most did. But this copy was bought from new by one owner who categorically stated it came with this inner I am offering. I would think this misprint mono version included these original inners until they ran out – that purely an opinion, not definitive – but I would not argue with anyone who bought the original album. Either way, the flame inner is far more interesting than a plain white one, and this one is fantastic to match the cover and insert.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Any music lover, collector and Beatles fan will know all about this groundbreaking classic. What I think is far more important is to make clear what is actually here on offer and the visual and playing conditions.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and arguably ever better, this up there with the very best mono text Pepper covers I have seen. A fully laminated gatefold format with the two large external top flipbacks inside. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse, this one of the few I have seen without the ‘Patents pending’ text. Includes the insert sheet and the original style flame inner sleeve – as stated above, the owner said it came with it – I will simply offer any record as it comes to me. I always feel this flame inner makes any copy truly complete anyway.

Lamination – Front & Back: This is a fantastic example with little to fault. The first thing that hits the eye is the deep colour of the front graphic which is beautiful. Some were less intensely coloured, even pale which look less nice, but this has real deep colour hue and contrast. The laminate both sides retains deep and hugely impressive shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting, minimal dulling and any creasing very little, fine and light. Only gentle rim impression on the back seen under light. Age-defying and gorgeous, this is one to hold and really admire.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is fantastic with two huge top flipbacks and no ink loss or grubbiness to their ends which is unusual as these often sticker together when closed and pull when opened. This cover still has immense ‘spring’ and tightness to the inside hinge laminate which is virtually uncracked and solid. It retains a loud fresh ‘creak’ on opening and will not open fully without force (which is not recommended of course to retain the uncracked inside laminate on the fold). The creak on opening possibly the loudest I have heard and this feature reminds of new. The only minuscule blemish: a tiny fragment beneath the laminate in manufacture.

Top Edges: Both fully and smoothly laminated and still straight with no chipping or wear, also flush and parallel.

Bottom Edges: Virtually the same.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening tiny and light as seen viewed end-on. Record normally enters on the back edge, both are open, and are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: A standard spine on this one with the text inverted. These are very prone to compression and forming central ridges on opening. This results in flaking and laminate loss, the text often sinking into the central area. This has largely been avoided with the text fully present and easy to read, any sinkage mild as-seen. This retains almost full laminate with any cracking, flaking or loss tiny and light near the very bottom corner – it’s very unusual to retain this amount and this is one of neatest standard spines I have seen in some while. Solid, quite straight with any compression light. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. A difficult spine that has fared exceptionally well compared to most seen.

Corners: The odd tiny tip crease (being critical), but barely any rubbing or real wear. Excellent shape mostly retained with no knocks, any dinks tiny and very light indeed.

Cover Summary: A superb all-round example of this classic 1960’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. With few blemishes or reminders of age, this beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): again I state, the original owner said this copy came with it. The plain white inners on EMI pressed records are almost ten-a-penny anyway and easy to find, this flame inner in this condition is a far different story. This, like the main cover is superb with all edges unsplit with no repairs (for a considerable change). An unlined inner printed both sides, this does include the ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text. Aged little with any discolouration of the seam adhesive little and very light with hardly any creasing, any rim impression light and faint. Even the top opening is crisp and neat with no tears or thickening of any note. The record itself apart, this is arguably the hardest part of this album to find in near top condition.

The Insert Sheet: PRACTICALLY MINT: deep colour, fresh and clean with no creasing. The back immaculate with no writing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and this being quite critical. An impressive mono record with unbanded track separation, this is impressively clean with fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy appearing modestly used on all the evidence with any surface marks light, largely wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. Just one tiny mark on ‘She’s Leaving Home’ omits a tiny few light brief ticks as mentioned further up, even these are fairly lost in the sound, there is little else of note to fault. Compared to high percentages of this ultra popular record, this looks sparingly used – I doubt if this one has seen light-of-day for decades. The one previous owner kept the record inside a replacement Decca inner sleeve (thus the real inner being so impressive), so under light a little dulling from the soft lining is seen, but this is only very mild and light in context, and reiterates its lack of handling or removal for years. Visually a super record that should please many collectors, but not for absolute purists who only want total ‘perfection’.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This copy plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault bar those few light ticks mentioned above. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Another masterclass in production by George Martin and this copy does it high justice. Any actual surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available mono copies will outperform this significantly I feel sure. With so many mono copies especially heavily played, often to near destruction and trashed, this is light years from that. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on standard stereo equipment. Generally well stored and handled – records this age will get some surface marks of blemishes, few avoid them completely in this mode, popularity and age especially. Little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better – especially with the rarer label misprint which are not seen at all often, this can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
