The Beatles : Rubber Soul 1/1 1st Press Loud Cut edition with hybrid labels
This rare Loud Cut pressing plays with excellent audio overall and has only one light click. There is some light static here and there but in no way does it overpower the music. The vinyl is visually very impressive and the cover has been so well preserved over the last 56 years. It has only very minimal wear and is one of the finest examples I have seen in many a year. The original Emitex is also in superb condition.
The first pressing had a so-called muddy bass and aggressive vocal sound and production was soon stopped hence the rarity.
This particular Loud cut has hybrid labels perhaps making it even more collectable! S1 has the Sans-serif font with a space after the song titles before the * credit indicator but S2 has Times New Roman font but with no space after the song titles. According to the Beatles-collection site the vast majority with a TNR font had a matrix of either 1/4 or 4/1 but as can be seen this has the first Loud Cut matrix of 1/1. I guess there was a mix and match of labels in the factory! I can only assume this is rare as I have certainly never seen one before.

Play grading
S1 begins with a stunning version of 'Drive My Car' that has no interference at all aside from a little static on Harrison's intro. From then on the clarity is so impressive and needless to say there are no clicks or pops. There is just a hint of very light static in the background every now and then but it is so quiet as to be totally non-intrusive. A Near Mint- start for sure.
The classic 'Norwegian Wood' plays in a very similar manner and again Near Mint- is deserved. Each note can be heard so precisely - the definition of the audio is so good. There is barely any static and from start to finish this can hardly be faulted.
'You Won't See Me' again plays very clearly with only a little more static. However, it is kept to a minimum and is very much in the background. Ex+
'Nowhere Man' in my opinion is the first obvious example of the 'aggressive' vocal sound and 'muddy' bass. Still sounds good to my ears though! There is no interference, very little static, and Ex+ is a fair assessment of the audio although I am sure many would grade higher.
'Think For Yourself' provides another example of a vinyl so well preserved down the years. For a mono record being played on a stereo system the audio is very strong and again there are no clicks or pops. There is no obvious static and again Near Mint- is correct.
As you approach the end you expect some inner groove distortion but it is kept to a minimum here and 'The Word' plays extremely well for a louder more up tempo track. Ex+
'Michelle' ends the side with a little more static but that is common with track. That is however the only intrusion and there are no clicks or pops. I am sure the static could be reduced when played as 'mono' but I will grade as VG+ just to be on the safe side.

'What Goes On' on S2 plays with wonderful precision from start to finish and per S1 there are no clicks or pops. There is just the faintest of underlying static but quite honestly it is barely audible and easily deserves a Near Mint- grade.
'Girl' again plays very clearly with only some light background static here and there. For a relatively quiet track the audio is very 'clean' and with just one light click right at the end (the first on the album!) this is Ex I would say.
'I'm Looking Through You' is of a very similar standard. Only light intermittent static and no clicks or pops. Another Ex track.
The quiet intro on 'In My Life' has some static that is a little more obvious but as the vocal begins the playback is very clear. Thereafter it plays very well but in some sections there is a little more background static so Ex- is about right here.
'Wait' is very impressive audio and that 'aggressive' vocal sound prevalent on the Loud Cut pressings is certainly in evidence here. There is no intrusion on the audio and Near Mint- is deserved.
'If I Needed Someone' plays with very strong audio and only a little inner groove distortion. Ex
'Run For Your Life' ends this rare album in a similar way with powerful audio and only minimal distortion. There is no interference and for a final track the playback is excellent. As I always say the distortion I am sure could be 'improved' when this is played as a mono record. This is still worthy of an Ex grade.
In summary this very collectable hybrid Loud Cut press plays to an excellent standard overall with only one light click on S2! There is some underlying static here and there but nothing that is very intrusive. Together with a very clean vinyl and a superb cover this would add to any collection.
Visual grading
The vinyl is in excellent condition with a healthy glossy sheen and has no marks or scratches. All I can detect under a strong light are some light hairlines although the majority of these are caused by sleeve removal I am sure. It is a very clean Loud Cut edition and like I say there cannot be many around as good as this one. The run out grooves are very clean with only a handful of light hairline marks.
The Cover
The 'Patents pending' G & L cover remains is in lovely condition and one thing that stands out is just how strong and robust it still is like it hasn't been handled too much. It retains its original shape perfectly with no bending or creasing. The edges are near perfect with only a couple of barely visible rubs and the thin pinched spine is also in superb order with only minimal corner wear. The right hand corners have a little more wear but again it is only minimal. The opening edge has lost none of its original shape and has hardly any handling wear. The front cover has no marking and has only two small laminate creases near the opening edge. There are a handful of the common laminate creases around the edges but definitely less than usual. The 'white' back cover is the real star of the show! It has only a couple of very small faint marks and a minimal amount of fading around the edges and the flipbacks are still in superb condition with no staining/marking. They are rarely seen this clean and remain firmly in place. A stunning example of this cover for sure.
The Emitex Inner
The original inner has no side splits or tears, no marking, and only a little creasing.
The Labels
The yellow/black Parlophone labels are very clean with only one faint white mark on the S1 label. There is some spindle but not an excessive amount and the KT tax code is stamped on the S2 label.
