Label/Format: Parlophone – matt smooth surfaces, side two has the ‘K T’ embossed tax codes, both characters on this copy so perfect they are actually a little more difficult to see. Especially so the ‘T’ that is lost amongst the silver text. Be assured it is fully present and immaculate. As seen on the pictures, this is a ‘first pressing’ format with the ‘Parlophone Co Ltd’ rim text, fairly quickly replaced by Gramophone Co Ltd’ on the ‘second pressings’.

Label Conditions: Both in beautiful conditions and from the same impressive collection as the ‘With The Beatles’ I am currently offering (for a couple of days only). These are very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Side two indeed has only a couple or three with side one with only a tiny few more. Run the Ebay magnifier over these, that is what it is for, you will be hard-pressed to find them better. These vintage Beatles albums are rarely seen so little used and this beautiful record offers superb sound throughout.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 158 grams. A heavyweight record pressed in the era of quality.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: As I always state when offering Beatles albums, very few standard issues can ever be considered rare as they sold in vast numbers, this being no exception. It’s all down to condition as few survive in top conditions and still offer the sound people really want to hear. More sold in mono and usually subjected to heavy usage on the most basic – often crude – record players with all the predictable results which I have stated so many times. Classic ‘party’ records, many loaned out, written-on, left out of covers or simply played multitudes of times is all par-for-the-course for such albums. Finding lesser-played and unabused copies is far harder. Also for this album, it has a much less resilient and fragile cover, these are often in very poor conditions as well. It was the first Beatles gatefold format and by a distance the most difficult to find in fine condition due to the front being only single thickness, also the record storage is via the inside centre. So all has to be put into perspective – this is a very fine copy, and most importantly, it plays with lovely clean, consistent sound throughout.

Brief Info: As most will know, this was the fourth UK Beatles album – predictably it sold in vast numbers even without a UK hit single included. Interested collectors will know more than enough about this album, so I will not waste time and concentrate on the conditions of this particular copy.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): but I think is actually looks better. A gatefold format with the front and back laminated. This cover did not have the ultra shiny style laminate the other albums usually had. It has the outline ‘mono’ on the front top right. The inside is matt and smooth with the right side having two external flipbacks. Record entrance is via the inside centrefold into the right area making the single thickness front and spine area very fragile and prone to wear and damage. Printed and made in England, these were not credited. Include the original tracing paper style lined inner sleeve.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains a fine shine, but it is not the high-gloss style of laminate used on the previous albums. This does not appear dulled, but is a different style of finish – not all laminate is the same. It has a only a fine lift on the central area of the spine edge of the back. On that area, the card has a movement or pressure ‘thin’ from the record, this has not quite split, but close. This has not been repaired or tampered with, it shows even less on the inside. So that is a not untypical blemish so often seen on this cover, but only quite mild. There are also a couple of creases on the back, but these the only ones of any real note on this thin flimsy cover which rarely will escape with none. Most of any of the few marks are small and very light, indeed the more fragile front has little to really fault. A little minor edge burr traces aside, this is impressive, and overall the entire cover retains a fine freshness and good looks. Not for the perfectionists, but a 50-year-old cover with a heavyweight record inside all that time will acquire a few gentle issues, so on that basis it will please many, more forgiving collectors.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The central spine fold ‘thin’, looks more like a very fine crease and is around an inch long. Clearly the culprit being the heavy record’s rim, probably the result of closing the cover with the record not fully pushed inside? Anyway, not a great deal else to fault. Both the black and white surfaces are clean, fresh and attractive, a major positive being the lack of fingermarks or handling traces on the suscepible and revealing matt surfaces. Both flipbacks are strong, solid, clean and unworn. Even their ends clean and unburred with no sticking.

Top Edges: The laminated back edge is nigh-on perfect. The very thin fragile front has mild thickening and gentle burr traces here and there. This mainly seen viewed end-on, the actual front of this edge has barely any chipping at all.

Bottom Edges: The back edge is similar to above with a tiny surface chip only. The front edge is crisp and very neat indeed with minimal thickening or burring.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The back edge is neat, crisp and smooth, gentle bowing that is rarely avoided totally. The front has a little thickening nearer the lower half, this is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced, again finding one of these razor sharp goes beyond difficult.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with a little compression that again, is immensely hard to avoid. The spine being understrength, single thickness. Many will flatten totally and become very ragged and often torn, especially at the ends. As stated already, a fine thin on the bottom fold near the centre, this from the record’s rim. A near split but not quite, this has not been repaired. Relatively light, but it can be seen from the back. The ends are quite deeply pinched in manufacture, the top one especially retains very fine shape, the bottom a little more compressed. It remains quite erect with some surface crinkle, the text fully present and intact, the near split has avoided the lettering. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel, a tiny overhang to the right side opposite reitterating no trimming to the right edge.

Corners: Again more fragile areas: any corner rubbing is mainly light and small. All retain fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: By some distance, the most fragile Beatles cover (the ‘Let it Be’ box apart). Overall a strong all-round example. Not perfect, but it will better many, of that I have no doubt. As can be seen on my pictures, this is still an attractive and neat example, it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: this being the fragile tracing paper lined style inner. A splendid clean and fresh example, the only issue is a crease on one corner, this often deliberate to secure the record. Two immaculate window circles and pristine lining. All edges unsplit with no repairs. I doubt if the record had removed from this inner and cover for decades.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very light, mostly super-fine and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Viewed in normal daylight conditions, this looks even better, only under my very bright ‘grading’ lamp do such minor surface blemishes come to light. Whispy surface traces, probably from dry-cloth cleaning that was recommended in the day. Totally harmless, there are no penetrating ‘needle’ marks on this impressive record. Visually a super record that should please many collectors, but not for this who again want visual perfection whatever the cost.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This impressive early example plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This one really hit-the-mark as the early copies really do with full-on detail and sonic delivery of those wonderful songs. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, barely anything heard at all, and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this quality Parlophone rim pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp with no single channel noises when played on stereo equipment. Vocals and music all clear, precise and focused with barely any hint of sound degrading at all. I also remind, I play all my records on a clinically revealing Linn LP12 Sondek for which such records were never really designed. In fact this turntable was still some years away form being developed when this record hit the markets in late 1964. But as always, when such clean sounding mono records are played on such equipment, they sound tremendous bringing out detail vintage mono record players could only dream of. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended to those wanting a clean all-round original copy to play and enjoy without spending a king’s ransom for the privilege.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
