TERRY SMITH ‘FALL OUT’ 1969 FIRST PRESSING (1Y + 2Y STAMPER CODES IN RUNOUT GROOVE) PHILIPS VINYL LP

Sleeve Condition: Ex, no marking, writing, stickers, defect or damage.

Record Condition: Very occasional, soft crackle or pop and as small mark on the last track on Side 1 which does not sound or affect play. Remainder is in Ex-, some light, sleeve withdrawal, handling type marks but plays Ex throughout.

Best known as lead guitarist with jazz-rock legends IF, Terry Smith is one of the great unsung British guitarists. Named best jazz guitarist in 1968's Melody Maker poll, he made this ultra-rare solo debut the same year. Produced by his friend Scott Walker, it's a masterful mixture of standards and originals, featuring top jazz musicians such as Kenny Wheeler, Harry South, Gordon Beck and Ray Warleigh.

"Fallout" is a glorious piece of late-1960s British jazz kitsch. With its lounge bossa grooves, Bacharach covers, grooving blues and lush orchestration it is among a select group of records by local jazzmen which sought both to bring them a more commercial audience and to meet the popular music halfway without either side surrendering its own qualities. Whatever one may think of the more commercial tracks on this album, there is no denying Smith's immense instrumental talent though one ought to more than mention the closing contribution "Harry's Theme", a stalking blues with altered harmonies which provokes a towering solo from Ken Wheeler, and which, like this record itself, deserves to be better known.
