Label Conditions: Both attractive with minimal ageing or handling traces. Spindle marks less than moderate, small, light and faint. All very modest for the era of the mono record.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: Third album from this British blue-based rock band. Featuring the guitar talents of Alvin Lee, this was one of the band’s most famed albums. This is a first-pressed mono original, never easy to find, especially ones that play with mainly clean sound. Old mono record players made sure of that, this one has avoided the usual traumas and sounds impressive with only slight hints of it’s considerable age and mode. Lovely cover too, unless absolute silence is demanded, this should please many, if not most collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a gatefold format with front and back Clarifoil laminate and wide spine. Printed and made in England by Garrod and Lofthouse International Ltd and includes the ‘Patents Pending’ text. The rear has the mono/stereo peephole, the red inner denotes this being a mono example. This hole is large, and bigger than standard.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides look impressive with shiny, clear and quite fresh laminate. Minimal traces of dulling on the front with just a little on the back seen more under angled light. A small few surface creases, mostly half moon types that have very modest visibility. Adhesion is almost total and marks or impressions are few and faint also. Often a cover that flattens badly, this has not happened to this one and it will not prove easy to find much better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The unlaminated inner gatefold is in super condition with minimal traces of any wear.

Top Edges: A mild rub to the front left, little else.

Bottom Edges: These are unprotected and have light to moderate patchy rubbing. Storage edges like these seldom escape some wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear with any thickening or burring minimal. Record enters on this back edge, the front being sealed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal evidence of any crushing or flattening, mild tilt only. This is very wide and mostly erect with any creasing tiny and faint. All text is present and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate.

Corners: The top corners have little wear at all. The spine bottom only mild end rubbing. Most of any wear on the bottom right pair that have moderate rubs. These retain fine shape, the rest very fine to excellent.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this lovely late 60’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): the red mono polylined inner in the Decca style of course, is in super condition. Clean, fresh, uncreased with both window circles crisp and sharp and very clear lining that is barely even crinkled. All edges unsplit with no repairs and hardly a crease to be seen. This is date coded 2-70, so a very late mono, also British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): with any surface marks tiny, fine, few and faint. A very impressive visual mono copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. The labels may indicate several plays, but these playing surfaces have avoided the perils of the mono age. Remember, just one arm drop or jolt and the likely deep scratch or crator potentially inflicted by a heavy tracking mono record player. We have all seen them – this has none. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This excellent record plays mostly even above it’s high visual grading with practically little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal and gentle, on the impossibly quiet passages, mostly near the beginning of side two, light traces were heard (this on hugely sensitive stereo equipment for which this record was not really designed) and no noteworthy pops or clicks were noted and overall, this quite difficult record has been well preserved. Deram, part of Decca, were well-known for tough, high quality pressings and few disappoint unless played unsympathetically on less than worthy equipment. The curse of the mono record was the very heavy stylus tracking weight and it’s thickness. Many were sapphire tipped – far softer than diamond – and chipped far more easily. These wore very quickly and most did not replace them frequently enough, thus damaging groove-wear was inflicted. The invisible enemy of the vinyl record, this has not been subjected to this abuse. Unless absolute silence is mandatory, few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp – just enough in the odd place or so, to remind what you are actually listening to – a record well over 40-years-old. Still a lovely copy that I enjoyed immensely, this copy will prove difficult to find significantly better, especially in mono, and can be highly recommended to most collectors, except those who want perfection at any cost.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
