Ultima Thule is the (justly) legendary single originally released on the Ohr label in Germany. It was recorded in 1971 and features the same lineup as Alpha Centauri:

Notes...Almost totally unknown by their large audience, this Tangerine Dream 7" EP represents the band at their most freak out rocking moment. It’s structurally built with the same ideas & ingredients exposed in their first "Electronic Meditation"; consequently you can hear absolutely gorgeous psychedelic noises with lot of fuzzed out guitars and electric spacious organs , featuring an obvious sense of improvisation. Side A is an amazing "cosmic" krautrock classic, including aggressive moody guitar riffs, dreamy like organs. It's made as an instrumental psych jam with massive, wonderful spacey arrangements. Side B delivers a more "meditative" composition, an astral voyage with ecstatic & enigmatic mellotron sequences. The tension goes higher at the end with a true cosmic, mystical musical climax. Awesome and so recommended! Ultima Thule is TD at their very best with the ambitious & macrocosmic "Electronic Meditation", "Alpha Centauri", "Zeit" and "Atem". One can hardly imagine a group like Tangerine Dream actually recording and releasing a 45, if ever a group was geared specifically for the long player format and eventually CD format it was this bunch from Germany. Though they weren't the first German psych/prog group to try their hands at the 7" 45 format, the equally unlikely German group Amon Duul had actually issued the 45 only release of "Eternal Flow" b/w "Paramechanical World" two years earlier (groups like Can, Neu and even Faust also got in on the fun at one time or another.)

Still when one thinks of Tangerine Dream they usually think of their sprawling, mega-prog outings such as "Zeit", "Atem" and "Alpha Centauri." Yet when you go back to the group's first proper album "Electronic Meditation" you can clearly see that this was a group that liked to turn up the volume and rock out when the mood struck them.

"Ultima Thule" was issued in 1972 over both sides of 45 on the OHR label. Side A features a blistering dose of progressive acid rock that brings to mind groups such as Man, Hawkwind and The Pink Fairies with an equal dose of "A Saucerful Of Secrets" Pink Floyd. Part 1 also looks ahead to post-punk groups like Joy Division, Wire & The Comsat Angels.

"Ultima Thule" part 2 is a more sedate affair that is much more in line with the group's albums. This piece just kind of hangs there in the air, aided by doomy keyboards and Nick Mason style rolling percussion.

What Tangerine Dream were hoping to achieve with this release is anyone's guess, I seriously doubt they had the pop charts in mind. But who knows, artists as unlikely as The Soft Machine, Alice Coltrane and Van Der Graaf Generator had released similar type 45's. You have to sort of admire them for the attempt to have a hit single.

Packing Procedures: All records are securely and well packed in top quality material to avoid any unnecessary damage during transit.When posted the records are removed from the covers,if possible,and placed in a PVC outer protective sleeve to prevent any sleeve splits in the post. I use brand new top quality mailers, either the envelope style with super thick stiffeners to stop any sleeve bends in transit, or the “cruciform” style that wrap around the 12"/lp. I aim to dispatch within 48 hours of receiving payment . It is recommended that you choose the option for recorded delivery (within UK) or registered delivery (for Europe and Rest of the World) for higher value items . I cannot be held responsible for items lost or damaged that are not shipped by recorded / registered mail . I obtain a certificate proof of posting for every item sent .
