Stanley is an enigma to many who have not examined his depth. Considered by many for his commercial “funk” successes and his association with ex-wife organist Shirley Scott they didn’t know Stan can play! I used to see and play with Stan and his trumpet player brother Tommy and they blew my mind particularly with original melodic phrasing from them both. Here recorded live at Harlem’s legendary Minton’s Playhouse is Stanley joined by another melodic master Grant Green and between them both the lyricism melts your brain. The vibes are mellow as is the relaxed groove flows from the stalwart rhythm section of Horace Parlan, George Tucker and Al Harewood. It’s 1961 in Harlem and you are there groovin’ to some really talented players.
